If money is no object than get yourself a catfish series Abu, if money is tight this reel will work well if you are familiar with using baitcasting reels. If you 're going for bigger cats you might consider changing the line.

Bought this reel for a black Friday event in 2018 and have used this reel on an ugly stick catfish rod and I 'm very impressed with it. The only things I had to do is break the reel down and re- oil it and change the line on the reel but I always re- oil my reels before using for the 1st time. I highly recommend this reel for the price. I restrung this reel with 65 lb braid and it's held up great but always back it with good mono line.

Great reels. I have 2 and am shopping for another. Wo n't buy it here because they do not have the higher gear ratio in the left hand retrieve model. Only 4 stars because it comes with combat grips instead of Winn knobs. But, I have swapped the combat grips for Winn round knobs. I even contacted Lew's and was able to get black and gold end caps for the knobs. I have one on a TP1 Black and the other on a Custom Lite. I bought this reel about 2 months ago and so far, it's done great! I bought this reel for saltwater use and it has held up fine. I 've caught everything from edge of slot puppy drum off the beach to small specks and striper in the sound. I can happily report that thus far, I have had no problems with the unsealed drag. As far as the drag's performance, it could n't work better. the drag knob is easy to adjust while playing a fish and has a nice clicky- ness to it so you do n't over adjust it. I did get a little sand in there while fishing from the beach, but after removing the spool and giving it a thorough rinse it works like new. My few complaints are rather petty. The first being that the finish seems to come off fairly easily. while having it in the canoe with me it was sliding around and the matte black finish rubbed off a bit around the rim. however, it's hardly noticeable and only cosmetic. Secondly, the rubbery handle occasionally catches the fly line when I 'm casting. It juts out a bit more than I care for.

Left hand wind is a must for me. I am right handed but never figured out why so many people choose to cast with their right hand and then switch hands so they can wind with their right hand. The size and weight are also just right as I mainly fish for striped bass and blue catfish with this reel perfect on a seven foot medium action rod and 15 lb. test mono. I recently picked up my first Shimano Reel ever!!! BTR4000OC is the one I chose to go with for the option of having the ability to allow bait to run freely with out having to keep a bail flipped open. I like the freespool feature on my Penn Rival with clicker for this purpose as well. But I wanted a spinning reel and my local DSG did not have any Penn LL's in stock in store. I had toyed with the Shimano's many times in store but always walked away from them... Not because I did n't know the name, but just because of my love of Penns.. Anyhow back to the reel, I mated this reel to a 7' Berkley Lightning HD 1 piece rod with 14lb Cajun Mono backing and 30lb Sufix 832 Advanced. I took this combo out to the Apollo Beach park the next morning and caught a nice little red snapper on live bait. Then the next day the reel got the real test, I was jigging soft plastics with 15 lb flouro leader when I hooked into a good sized snook just above slot. This reel handled the snook like a dream, did not wear me out before wearing down the fish. I was able to land this snook but was unable to capture a picture as I was out in the water wading with out a camera. I do recommend this reel, will be purchasing the 8000 series to replace my worn out reel on my surf rod!

I have several larger baitfeeder spinning reels for surf fishing, including a Penn Fierce III 6500 and an Okuma Avenger 8000 series. I was looking for something smaller/lighter but still tough enough for medium duty saltwater. I opted for the Penn Fierce IV 4500 series which I spooled with PowerPro 30lb braid, as opposed to paying almost double for a Spinfisher 4000 series with LiveLiner option. Very satisfied. So far so good for a first time baitcaster user.
