If money is no object than get yourself a catfish series Abu, if money is tight this reel will work well if you are familiar with using baitcasting reels. I have only been able to go fishing twice since purchasing this reel. I put it on my teenage daughter's rod the first time and then fixed the reel that was on her rod for the next time. The other day I hooked into a massive red in a pond and it ran straight for open water, taking out about 120 yds of line. I bought this reel about 2 months ago and so far, it's done great! I bought this reel for saltwater use and it has held up fine. I 've caught everything from edge of slot puppy drum off the beach to small specks and striper in the sound. I can happily report that thus far, I have had no problems with the unsealed drag. As far as the drag's performance, it could n't work better. the drag knob is easy to adjust while playing a fish and has a nice clicky- ness to it so you do n't over adjust it. I did get a little sand in there while fishing from the beach, but after removing the spool and giving it a thorough rinse it works like new. My few complaints are rather petty. The first being that the finish seems to come off fairly easily. while having it in the canoe with me it was sliding around and the matte black finish rubbed off a bit around the rim. however, it's hardly noticeable and only cosmetic. Secondly, the rubbery handle occasionally catches the fly line when I 'm casting. It juts out a bit more than I care for.

I bought this reel( 2500 size) and paired it with a Lew's Custom Pro Speed Stick( got in on sale for$ 90) and am using with 8 lb test fluoro. I use this set up for lightweight and finesse type fishing such as skipping senkos under docks, drop shot fishing or throwing weightless texas rigs around. Will say this reel feels really smooth and can cast a great distance without much weight. Skipping under docks is way easier with this reel also because of how smooth it is. It is definitely an upgrade from the Lew's Mach Crush spinning combo and the Lew's Mach 2 spinning combo I have. My dad is trying to get back into fishing and plan to buy him this as his first reel as well. Definitely recommend.

I bought it last night, i got it spool with 15 pound pline flouro, set the tension knob were the lure falls slow big key to prevent backlash cast it with 12 mph wind towards my face for 3 hours not one single backlash. Do not listen to the manual on how to set the tension knob. Smooth retrieve compare to the regular slx you guys will notice that.

I made a decision to purchase this reel because they were on sale. I am a Shimano guy. I bought one and put it on my most abused application. 65 pound braid. On my frog rod. One year later I purchased 2 more due to apparent toughness of the first. Put them on my second and third most used rods. Fast forward two more years, I have replaced all of my Shimano reels. And do n't expect to look back. Cost is 30 to 40 percent lower than the Shimano reels. Thank you for making the choice to keep these reels in an affordable price.

This reel is simply amazing! Finally got to use it for the first time a few weeks ago, and I was really impressed. Spooled it with 12lb fluorocarbon and tied on a 1/2oz. jig. Once I finally got it dialed in to my settings, everything from hard casts against the wind, to skipping docks, I had no issues with backlash at all. Very impressed with the casting distance I was getting and that DC sound!! It ’s like music to my ears. Definitely a must own. If you 're on the edge of buying this, just go and do it because you wo n't regret it. I now own two.

This reel is great. You need to read the paperwork that comes with it. It explains how it has to be set up in order for it to work as it should. For instance as the guy who posted a 2 star said he had the brake setting at 4 and the tension set to a slow fall. Is not how it should be set up. The directions state tension should be set looser than you would a non dc reel, to allow the dc to work correctly. You also need to use the correct brake setting for the type of line you are using. Granted you can cast without setting it up correctly it the dc wont function right. My honest opinion as someone who is intermediate/ newer to baitcasting( 2yrs) this reel is great for the cost and does what its supposed to do. However if your having issue it's probably user error and you should read the paperwork and try again. Then if you have issues it could be the reel. I 'm going to buy another one or I might buy the metanium dc. I love the sound too

I was looking for something smaller/lighter but still tough enough for medium duty saltwater. I opted for the Penn Fierce IV 4500 series which I spooled with PowerPro 30lb braid, as opposed to paying almost double for a Spinfisher 4000 series with LiveLiner option. Very satisfied.
