I really enjoyed the ability to determine the height of the rain fly depending on the conditions. ... Hiking in the AT Memorial Weekend knowing I could not rely on shelters I invested in a hammock set up — the rain fly went up easy, covered great and kept me and my...

Bought it last month and used it a couple of times. Has n't rained yet but it was great blocking the wind and it was quick enough to set it up that I pulled it out just to provide some shade for the kids at a BBQ.

Used this weekend. Other than the sounds, did n't know it was raining.

I purchased this as a gift for my son in law. When he saw it, he was one happy camper! He and his entire family( wife& 2 teens) camp with hammocks now rather than bulky tents and sleep better.

Great tarp used for under the tent. Keep brush and dirt out of the tent.

5 notaclimber
I got this as a cheap alternative to buying a tent footprint. This is just about the right size for a ~6 person tent. It's just a tarp, so it did what it needed to do. No complaints.

Needed to put over plants during heavy rain to keep vegetables and fruit from becoming over saturated

[ This can be used for so many different things! I bought one after using my friend ’s as a sun shade on a beach outing, and now I ’ ve used it as a tarp for sleeping in my hammock and as a poor- man ’s bimini on my sailboat( draped over the boom to create shade). It can do anything! Super strong seams and stitching, no concern using it in a little bit of wind.

[ Will be excellent for backpacking and car camping. Took on a recent canoe trip and worked great. Very versatile and light weight and can be used with or without poles. I used trees and guylines...

[ I just purchased this in the 9x9. Have used the 12x12 and the 16x16 for a number of years. They ’ ve changed the color a couple of time but features are unchanged in the time I ’ ve been using them. Square shape is only way to go. Kudos for configuring this way. So many tarps are rectangular. For a haystack, sure. Fine. For a shelter, the square has far more setup options. There ’s heavy tieouts on the four corners and lighter ones along the edges. Well spaced. A little stretch to keep it taught.. important in rain. I don ’ t know if they market this as a rain shelter but that ’s all I use it for. The big one if camping next to a car, the 12x12 for rafting. This 9x9 for backpacking. Two lbs may seem like quit a bit to pack for a tarp but covered area is pretty great. And large enough to configure in some version of a ‘ storm ’ mode if conditions warrant. I have a HMG DCF tarp. It ’s 8. 5x8. 5 with no stretch. Definitely harder to get a taught pitch. It ’s light as a feather but that extra half foot per side is more than it sounds on this Kelly. 12% more covered area even though only 6% more length.. ya know if you get all STEM about it... I won ’ t go into costs per square foot between the two and it ’s not even really a fair comparison given the different materials used but if your not into packing a piece of square fabric that costs as much as a pair of skis, this is one of the best values out there right now.

[ The 9 ’ tarp is still pretty big and a great size for a standard camp site or small group. Lots of points for attaching clips and guy lines. Fairly light but not super light. Comes with its own carrying bag that it fits into easily.

[ We bought this tarp for backpacking. It ’s light weight and easy to use. Just a quick, easy up shelter. We can ’ t wait to use it for a multitude of adventures!

Frequently Asked Questions For Fly Tarps

Fly tarps are versatile outdoor gear designed to provide shelter and protection from the elements. They are commonly used in camping, hiking, and backpacking to create a dry space for resting or cooking. Their lightweight and portable nature makes them ideal for various outdoor activities.

Fly tarps are often made from durable, water-resistant materials such as nylon or polyester. These materials are chosen for their lightweight properties and ability to withstand harsh weather conditions. Additionally, many fly tarps feature reinforced seams and UV protection to enhance their longevity.

Choosing the right size fly tarp depends on your intended use and the number of people you want to shelter. Consider the dimensions of the area you need to cover, as well as the height at which you plan to set it up. A larger tarp may provide more coverage but can also be heavier to carry.

Most fly tarps are designed for quick and easy setup, often featuring grommets or attachment points for securing them to trees or poles. With a little practice, you can efficiently pitch a fly tarp in various configurations to suit your needs. Taking them down is usually straightforward, making them convenient for outdoor adventures.

Yes, fly tarps are designed to provide shelter in a variety of weather conditions, including rain and sun. Many are waterproof or water-resistant, making them suitable for use during wet weather. However, it's important to consider wind conditions and ensure the tarp is securely anchored to prevent damage.
