It adds just enough warmth over a base layer to reduce the bite of morning chill. There 's a reason you see so many really favorable reviews of this jacket. It checks all the boxes. Packable, super light, blocks the wind, repels mist or light rain and looks great. Pull it out of your kit at a windy summit or the top of a pitch. If you are slim and athletic, it fits true to your usual size. I have a paunchy `` dad bod '', so I had to go up one size for midriff room. You wo n't have to, though. I also have the lined hoody version of this garment, and like it equally for belaying or just spectating at the base of the crag.

This shell has proven a perfect addition to time in the elements where protection is critical and weight is a factor. I have used this on a several volcano ski missions this past summer and spring. It packs light and provides the summit protection needed when wind is ripping and body temps are dropping. Marmot allotted a good amount of pockets without going overboard and the pit zips provide ventilation that allows you to tune your protection on the move without having to stop to layer up or down. When it comes to rain protection, it 's hard to beat Gore. It also vents well for active pursuits.

I wore this during the steady deluge of a Pineapple Express rain event for over an hour and remained dry and comfortable. All of the zippers( main, armpit, pocket) have been trouble- free. I went into the store not knowing what I was looking for and stumbled across this beauty( in stores they had the Black color). I did n't know I needed something like this until I saw it. Has a nice shell material that seems like it could keep you dry with some light rain or snow, and the inside is soft and comfortable and feels like it 'll be pretty warm and perfect for shoulder season to wear out and about or even around the house. I 'm 6' 1 '' and about 165- 170, so tall and slim/athletic and I could have either gone Medium or Large but I ultimately went with Medium( although I was tempted to go Large but for insulated type jackets I like them to fit a bit more snug for warmth purposes) Differences between the M and L below: Medium: Sleeves are a perfect length for me. A bit narrower fitting. The main thing I preferred about the Large was the length.... if the Medium had the Large length it would be perfect perfect. I was also wearing a waffle knit sweater underneath and the Medium still fit great. Large: Great length. Arms a bit long. Torso and chest fit nicely but around my mid section/stomach area is where it was a bit more boxy for my liking. Went with Medium because I envision wearing this when it 's not frigid out so not needing to layer up a ton underneath. A nice flannel or sweater is all I need and fits perfect under the Medium.

Absolutely killer jacket. Bought it to use for teaching a backpacking class in the late fall in high mountains of Idaho where it can get pretty cold pretty quick. Used it in- 10f weather with a baselayer underneath and shell on top and stayed toasty the whole time. Provides an honestly impressive amount of wind resistance even on the seams. A lot of people claim durability issues but I 've used it climbing, backpacking, and bikepacking for about two years now and it 's done amazingly. Well done Mountain Hardwear!

Very body movement makes way too much shell noise. The shell could have also included a hood which could have been either tightly rolled into a zippered or Velcro collar. Keeps me warm in the 30s easily with just a normal shirt and a sweater. With real layers I have been able to walk approx 30 minutes round trip in the low 20s and strong winds. It ’s very warm and also gives you that psychological warmth boost of a fat, cozy puffer. The length is just right if you need a big outermost layer but don ’ t want a full parka length. I am normally between S and M for most things and a S easily fits me even with a chunky sweater. The two internal mesh pockets are clutch.

The fit is comparable to other OR jackets, maybe just slightly roomier for an extra layer. I am 5 ’ 10 ”, 145 lbs, and the small fits well though the sleeves could use an extra 1/2 ” or so

It is quite warm does a great job; I generally wear a L but went for the Medium here based on the recommendation that this would be slightly bigger than a regular sized one and I did n't plan on having multiple layers under it. If layering under it, then go for the regular size. It is heavier than my L Arcteryx Cerium LT, which will be my go to for packing and traveling. But overall, very pleased with what this does.

It 's lighter but warmer, which is crazy! This is for sure one of MHW 's unique and milestone garments, and a must have for anyone who likes being warm. There 's definitely no excuse for not carrying it with you, it 's tiny.

This jacket is a great improvement upon the previous Ghost Whisperer jacket in that it 's lighter and warmer. I ca n't think of a better jacket to keep warm while minimizing weight in the mountains. I also end up wearing it in town as it 's very comfortable. I think this is the only 1000 down fill power jacket available on the market today.

Working in Washington State as a climbing instructor, I am always on the lookout for the next great piece of gear. The Ghost Whisperer UL Hooded Down Jacket is an amazingly light piece of kit that goes un- noticed when in your pack, but is surprisingly warm for its featherweight lightness. The 1000- fill insulation is definitely top notch and a big step up from previously owned mid range puffy jackets. I brought this jacket on a 45 mile backpacking loop in the central cascades of Washington this fall where temps dipped below freezing and I was thoroughly impressed with the warmth to weight ratio of this jacket. However, with amazing lightness comes compromise. I was constantly worried about snagging the ultra thin ripstop shell fabric. The YKK 3 zippers were super light, but I wonder about the durability and longevity of repeatedly opening and closing pocket zips and taking the jacket on and off without having to using extreme caution. If you are looking to shave grams off of your pack weight, consider using the Ghost Whisperer UL Hooded Down Jacket to keep you warm on cool summer nights and shoulder season evenings. Just know that this jacket is a specialty piece, and not your everyday driver due to its lack of durability.
