I have a hiking/trekking shoe problem( name the brand, I might have 2 pair), and if I had to pick only ONE, to wear every day.. doing every thing.. for eternity... it's got to be this one. Sizing: I 'm an 11. 82, medium. I have the greys size 12 here. Great fit, there 'd be extra room if needed. Toe box remains roomy due to lacing grid, but it's welcomed. Nothing thicker socks/insoles ca n't fix of course if it pleases you. Closest thing to a barefoot shoe that I 've put on and liked. They call this a barefoot and I wo n't put up a fight, but they seem pretty tall( FOR a bf shoe). In any case, it's close, and I do love the grounded feel, but only because the tread is so supportive. Ya know how most shoes are either very technical, or, `` go straight! '' etc etc? These, you 're just kind of, surfing B) What's the Catch?... 1) I 'm aware of some longevity concerns w/ tread, but I 'd imagine the give- or- take goes to the shoe FTW- anything reasonable would be worth it b/c the shoe is that great. 2) I 'd be lying if I was n't a bit concerned about the construction of the eyelets- they give the impression that too many tough yanks will make them angry. Worst case, you can craft some metal loops into the shoes, and gives you a reason to visit w/ your local tailor and share stories:)

[ I was finally happy to see a wide light weight hiker from Keen. For awhile most of their light weight hikers never came in wide, so this is very welcome. The shoe overall is well build with solid traction. They are sneaker comfortable out of the box but I do wish they had slightly more arch support. The lack of arch support was solved by using a Keen foot insert, the k- 10. Tons of room the toe box too.

I like these a lot: They have a nice wide/not too wide footprint. They have good ankle support. They have great traction. They are very comfortable. The waterproofing worked well( as it should because they are new). My only complaint is that padding on the ankles makes them pretty wide at the ankle and that tends to catch debris and funnel it down into the shoe... so they are not my pick for places where there is a lot of trail debris.... or perhaps I should have used gaiters. But they are perfect for wet, slippery, or dry trail conditions and casual wear. To me, the picture makes them look like they have green trim: They are shades of grey, not green-- I was pleasantly surprised by that, and I think they are a good- looking pair of shoes.

As for warmth, it kept my feet quite warm without wearing a pair of thick socks, but I am still waiting for the heavy snow period in Chicago so I can test it out even further. The waterproofing is great for the slushy winters we get here in the Midwest. I typically wear a 2E shoe, so I was pleasantly surprised when this fit well as a 10. 5M. Took about a week to break in, and once broken in, feels great. The traction is awesome, no worries about slipping on the ice. The shoe makes it easier than a boot to take on and off, but I 'd use a boot to shovel the driveway or walk through heavy/deep snow. This is good for walking on icy roads and driveways. I 'm a big fan of Keen's pragmatic sense of style. The toe cap means I do n't have fear of stubbing my toe. Also, it's a great feature when you kick the tire wells of your car to get the disgusting snow that accumulates that after driving for a while and you wonder if removing this snow actually makes a difference performance wise.( But once it drops it feels satisfying like you actually fixed the car.)

[ This Keen Targhee Apex is a comfortable shoe! One of the first things I noticed is how quiet the outsole and midsole were when walking around the store on carpet and cement. They 've since been on a dusty hike and a rainy road- to- trail hike. Nice cushioning, stability, and no dust nor water got inside the shoes. Since these shoes are nearly white you can see that some dirt has stayed in the crease on the forefooot even after being hosed off.( Again, no water got inside.) Fit wise, these have a neutral insole, roomier toebox, and wider heel. To keep my foot from sliding forward and to have a better fit for my heel I will add Superfeet insoles. This shoe runs true to size so I went up 1/2 a size to allow for swelling on longer and hot hikes. Nice shoe. I look forward to seeing how it feels after putting more miles on it.

Columbia is by far my favorite brand of hiking boots/shoes because they always just fit me really well, and this boot is no exception. The Newton Wander is a good looking and comfortable hiking boot. I do n't feel like it needed any break in period, and I wore mine as my daily drivers until the arches were shot. I always left them tied, but could get them on and off quickly by looping the laces on and off of the top couple sets of hooks. Even after they were worn out and the soles were worn down, I kept them around and wore them a couple more times to do some landscaping work and rebuild a retaining wall in my back yard. They can really take a beating!
