Purchased: Aug 2024 Uses: 15+ day hikes with scrambling in the eastern Sierra General: I purchased the Sportlite 30 to replace my aging, 11 year old, Deuter Speedlite 30. My preference is a balance of lightweight, volume, and comfort, and I had not seen anything comparable to my Speedlite until I saw the Osprey. Having used it for a few months, I feel I can give a run down of my impressions. Fit: I have a 16 ” torso and purchased the small which fits very well. It carries much better than my Speedlite as it stays in place on my back better and there is less play when scrambling. What I like: Stretch side panels keep items secure, as does the front stretch compression pocket. I am very pleased Osprey added 2 hip pockets and I like that one of them is a stretch mesh pocket. I ’ ve always had zippered pockets in the past, and the stretch mesh secures a snack and allows for an easier retrieval than fighting with a zipper. I wasn ’ t sure I was going to like the direct access hydration sleeve, but it has worked well. Although the shoulder straps seem thin, they are comfortable and I ’ ve had no issues with them. What could be better: The 2 stretch loops on the shoulder straps are too high. I have a carabiner attached to the lower loop and it sits on top of my shoulder and sticks out rather than hanging down. I ’ d really like to see these moved lower. The side stretch mess pockets are about an inch to high. It is very difficult to reach around to grab something, e. g., bottle of liquid fuel/electrolytes, and put it back. The front compression pocket is also a bit too high. I basically have to unclip the compression straps to grab something, e. g., gloves, hat, from the pocket. But, on the other hand, if the pocket were not as high, it might not hold as much. I 'm not sold yet on the trekking pole loops. They seem small cumbersome. When I 've had to store my poles, I stuff them in a side pocket and secure them with the top compression straps. Lastly, I prefer my key clip to be in the external pocket of the top lid. At the end of a hike, when I ’ m tired and just want to get in my car, with the clip in the external pocket, all I have to do is unzip+ unclip. The workflow to get to one ’s keys in the under the lid pocket design requires one to undo 2 compression straps( 2 clicks)+ flip the lid+ unzip the pocket+ unclip. That ’s 5 steps vs 2. Despite the above limitations, I really do like this pack, especially how it carries. It meets my requirements for being light, having a 30L volume, and being comfortable. I ’ m not sure of the durability yet.. the mesh panel on the back has already ripped.

As an ultralight Backpacker, I leave my honest review here. First, I have to say that I was excited when I got this backpack; the fabrics and the implementation are outstanding excellent job Black Diamond. The fast backpack idea with those extra shoulder straps makes this backpack ideal. Not only is this one waterproof or almost, but it is merely one of the best backpacks I ever owned. Believe it or not, I have tried several UL backpacks in my career. The only downside I see is that the shoulder pocket with the zipper is too tiny to hold a standard- sized cell phone comfortably. If I had a bigger one, I could guarantee it would never fit inside.

I have n't used this pack but it looks great, with excellent materials, pockets and overall construction. It also seems to tick most boxes for ultra runners who may be doing multi- day events requiring a lot of mandatory gear. Some runners may question the design choice of having only one side of the vest strap capable of carrying a 500ml soft flask. Perhaps this is the preferred option for fastpacking but having capacity for two soft flasks in addition to two zippered pockets on either side like the BD Distance 15 pack would be ideal, at least for ultra runners.

[ This sling is the raddest for travel. I ’ m a wilderness guide and I have to pack in all carry ons so the more I can pack onto a flight, the better. My travel hack is to wear this under my jacket but sling it to the side opposite the flight attendant when boarding and it works every time so I can have a backpack and duffel. These day slings look cute when I go out too so I can pack my notebook, water bottle, headphones, hat, makeup bag and scarf into it, literally everything. I was looking for a medium size pack for an overnight summit trip and this fits the bill. I like the decent size water bottle pockets on the side, hydration bladder support( that doubles as laptop pocket if not used) and the hideable waist straps. I also like the hidden mesh pocket for jacket/wet things. I wish there ’s a soft bottle pockets on the shoulder strap. The only minor annoyance I found was the thin zipper pulls are hard to find. But I love everything else about the bag.

Great hiking back- pack! Decently waterproof, good size for a day hike allows you to bring lunch, big water bottle, jacket and an additional layer and has plenty of space left. Everything is adjustable and it creates a great fit that makes carrying heavy items( like rocks, I 'm a geologist) very easy. Only disadvantage is that it has only one additional pocket on top( apart from the mesh front pocket) so all small things like keys, bandaids, lib balm, sunglasses have to go all together.

[ First off, the open front flap makes accessing my gear at the crag so easy. The built in rope tarp is lightweight, incredibly sturdy and just the right size( i use a 70m rope). I like how breathable the straps and back are even though that is not the main thing that I enjoy about this hard structured, EVA- molded backpanel with HDPE framesheet allows me to carry just about any weight on my pack up any approach, steep or long without being bothered. There are other wonderful key features of this bag but hats off to you Osprey. You guys made an excellent climbing pack.

Awesome bag that is bomb proof and so easy to pack and unpack with closure. Allows for luxury items with short to medium approach and easy to carry a rope with the top cover. Just wish they had a helmet attachment like some packs so you could have rope on top and helmet on back to help with storage space.

I 've been using this Surge backpack since 2019 and it has been great! I 've heard my family's thoughts on the newer model of the same backpack and they are not as impressed. The straps are more prone to breaking and the seams have started tearing pretty early in the life of their backpack. This being said, my older model has been so great! It's gone through years of hauling notebooks, folders, textbooks, water bottles, and clothes for practice after school. One of the shoulder straps did begin to tear last year( 2024) slightly but a quick stitch- job has got it back to working order. I would definitely buy a North Face backpack again!

` I am a 50 year old occasional hiker who has n't had a new pack since college. Just spent 3 days hiking in the Catskills with this pack on my back for 7- 8 hours a day and I love it. Plenty of space and super comfortable. Firstly, this bag has a small plastic internal frame to provide structure. The frame is lightweight, yet sturdy enough for a fully packed bag. Because of the frame's assistance with weight distribution, everything felt lighter on my back. This bag also has many different pockets and straps for varied packing strategies. The straps on the bottom of the bag are perfect for a sleeping bag, ground mat, or small tent. Underneath those straps is a small pocket that holds an included rain cover to keep your bag totally dry during heavy rain. There is also a pocket on top of the bag for any small items you may need to access on the go, without opening or unpacking the rest of the bag. Finally, there is a pocket for a hydration bladder, so you can stay hydrated as you move. Someone wrote that the Hikelite is lacking a handle loop. IDK, mine has one. As I do with all my backpacks, I put a large S- biner on it, so I can hang it, it even hooks over 40 cm thick stall doors so I do n't have to set my pack down. this is a very simple pack. pretty much just a fabric sack with a roll top closure, but that's honestly what i want from a climbing pack. it's durable, and there are a few nice features, like a hidden back panel pocket for a phone/protein bar access while wearing. other than that it's big enough for lunch, layers, and water, which is all i want to take with me on a climb. i slung a rope on top easy enough for a longish red rocks approach. only nitpick is that i would probably like some daisy chains, but i can add those myself if i want. overall, great pack for the money.

This pack surprised me on the upside. For my daily needs, I only need 16 liters, but I carry a 13 '' laptop and want good organization. This pack delivers. It's a very good design and great materials. Well thought out internal organization. My only gripe is the fabric used for the top quick access pocket feels like cheap sweatshirt material. It wo n't scratch sunglasses, but I 'd prefer something a little nicer. That said, I give this pack a thumbs up.

It is exactly what I was looking for in an everyday pack that I can also use for day hikes. The pockets are great, the straps are all adjustable and there even a whistle on the chest strap. Lots of options for attachment of items such as poles on the exterior of the pack. I love the small fleece pocket at the top of the bag. The outer pocket is great for putting wet or smelly items in. The water bottle pockets can be a bit of squeeze if you have a full pack for a Nalgene but it still fits. There is also a hole for a hydration bladder to fit through. Overall great pack for everyday life and day adventures! Love it.

Bought this pack a few months ago as a dayhike/laptop bag. Works great for both. My only disappointment was the trekking pole loops, which FUNCTION, but I typically carry them in one of the side stretch pockets as the bungees are not especially robust. Do not expect to be able to carry more than a rain jacket, down jacket, and a few essentials.

The pocket configuration is great and there is no wasted space. My son has recently outgrown his Jet18, after many many years of use and adventures. He is a tiny 11 year old, who is too tall for the Jet18, but too small for an XS adult pack. He has a 50l youth overnight pack that we love and the 38 is very similar! Like the 50l, I love that this pack is also adjustable and grows with the kid, allowing several years of use. He is currently on the middle setting( of 3 settings.) It has the top “ brain/snack pack ” that he likes and the inside is roomy enough for his 10 essentials, plus more. Osprey has changed the side pouches to have a fabric base, opposed to their previous mesh side pockets that would eventually wear out. I do wish Osprey made an adjustable back pack like this in a smaller liter. 38 liter is huge for a younger child as a daypack. He needs more than 18l( because his clothes are getting bigger and take up more space) but way less than 38l. I only have a 30l as an adult leader of the group.

I 'm fairly petite and often find backpacks are too big for me... this pack fits great( I ordered a couple different packs and this is the one I kept). I specifically bought it for a trip to Europe to use on the plane and when out and about. It fit everything I needed and I appreciated the multiple pockets for organizing. Only one of the side pockets will hold a water bottle since one is too short( 24oz owala fit perfect, 32oz hydro flask was a tighter fit). I liked how the zippers for the largest two compartments could hide behind the water bottle to be less conspicuous while traveling and I was also able to use a small cable lock on them. My 15 '' hp laptop does n't fit in the laptop pocket inside the pack, but does fit loose in the main compartment.

I thought it would be a great summit backpack for snow mountain adventures, extremely lightweight, and suitable for carrying an ice axe. It would be even better if it included a waist strap. You can go to war with this thing. They say it ’s an ultra pack, but it is also the most comfortable pack I ’ ve ever used for MTB ’ ing. As far as how much stuff it stores, it hits way above its weight! You can pack this thing to the gills. It ’s also surprisingly water tight! I ’ ve carried this in downpours only to find my stuff perfectly dry. For light packs w/o frames, I will never buy a different pack for the rest of my life. I now own a distance 8 and 12 because they are so great.
