My skin is susceptible to the wind, and the Windfall Balaclava does a great job at trapping in the heat trying to escape through my head and neck- enough so that the rest of my body feels warmer. I do wear glasses and have not had issues with fogging( though my glasses do have some anti- fog coating applied). I put on the balaclava, then put my glasses over it, and finally, a hat over that. I 'm using this product for walking around the city, so I ca n't speak to it in extreme conditions on the mountain or anything like that, but I am enjoying it and would recommend.

Since most winter hats do not hug your face( and therefore let cold air in especially in windy conditions), this product is great at keeping your ears and neck warm. Love this balaclava! I bought it a couple years ago, and do n't know how I lived without it. I live in USDA zone 4, where it gets down to- 25F in winter. Mainly use it for trail- hiking and snowblowing on cold winter days when a single hat and scarf layer is n't warm enough. I wear it as a base- layer, underneath a wool hat and neck gaiter. This balaclava is high quality, in design and construction. Generous in size, even fits my husband's big head, and the neck length is excellent. Good quality merino fabric, a smooth durable knit. Note that it's not wind- proof. As another reviewer mentioned, the material is too thin to wear on its own in cold weather. I prefer the thin material, as it dries fast, fits underneath a hat, and is easy to breathe through without creating a thick breath- vapor- ice- block( if you hike in the cold you know what I 'm talking about). It's comfortable to wear, and seams are in non- irritating locations. Has held up fine through a few washings( machine wash and line dry), with no shrinkage. The style can be described with one word: Ninja. The reason I 'm writing a review is, my husband stole my balaclava. I let him wear it `` just once '' on his walk to work, and now he wo n't give it back. So I ordered another one directly from the Smartwool website. It arrived fast, in perfect condition, and is the same exact excellent balaclava as my old one. Woohoo!

The shellaclava is very warm, fit is tight for me, and if you wear glasses it may cause them to fog endlessly. I purchased anti fog treatment for my glasses but still had fogging issues. All that aside I did not develop frost bite, I only use this in extreme cold as I find the garment to restrictive for general cold weather wear.

This is a great plain ole balaclava. It was so hard to find a plain fleece clava as all the others had neoprene faces or thin head portions or any other extra you could think of. I found that a plain jane clava was the most comfortable, plenty warm and very useful with it being easier to pull down below my chin to eat, drink, etc. And the fact that this clava was made in the USA, it get 2 thumbs up from me! I have a 7- 1/4 head size and tried on the S/M& the L/XL. I ended up getting the L/XL as I did not want a super snug fit.
