5 CO_Native
I bought these mittens for a snowshoeing trip that ended up being very windy and very cold. Despite the less than ideal conditions, my hands stayed toasty warm the entire trip. These mittens are very lightweight, but kept the wind out very well. There were even a few times along the trail were I had to take them off for a few seconds because my hands we too hot! They also seem to be sufficiently waterproof as I had no issues with water getting in or soggy mittens. The leather palms are also decently grippy which was a pleasant surprise. My only minor complaints are less than ideal dexterity( though that is to be expected with mittens) and there is n't a clip included to keep the mittens together when not in use. Overall these are wonderfully warm mittens and well worth the price!

5 C in Chi
[ Wore the gloves for two hours while sledding with my kids in 26 degree weather. My hands stayed extremely warm the whole time. I ’ ve gone through 6 pairs of gloves the last two years and everything let my hands freezing after a short time.

5 ericas
[ I finally broke down to buy proper winter mittens and chose these as I love my Hestra ski gloves. They are soft and warm, keeping my fingers relatively comfortable in 5 degree Wisconsin weather. They are a bit bulky, but I can still shove them in the pockets of my heavy winter jacket. They work well for sledding, walking around, etc. I would prefer a slightly longer, larger wrist so they can go up over the jacket to keep snow from getting in. But otherwise I am very pleased. They are certainly better than anything I have owned thus far( save for my Hestra ski gloves) for serious winter outdoor time.

5 Steve
[ I wore the mitts to the Lincoln Park Zoo Christmas Light showing. The temp was in the teens, but my hands stayed warm. What more do you need.

These are fantastic! I 'm normally a gloves guy but I bought these for very cold conditions and they did not disappoint. The fit is excellent. They kept my hands warm for two hours on a snowmobile at- 18C( without grip heaters). I like the snug cuffs, they fit under my coat sleeve and keep the snow out. Time will tell but they seem durable and well constructed.

5 Anthony G
I 've been using these gloves 2- 3 times weekly for around 4 months now. They 're starting to show some wear on the palms, but I believe that's on me for not treating the leather first. These gloves have keep my hands warm in temps as low as- 25° with the wind chill added. Still very efficient even when my hands got sweaty in them.

Frequently Asked Questions For Best Mittens for Winter Hiking

When selecting mittens for winter hiking, consider features such as insulation for warmth, waterproof materials to keep your hands dry, and breathability to prevent moisture buildup. Additionally, look for mittens with a good grip for handling trekking poles and adjustable cuffs to keep cold air out. Some mittens also offer touchscreen compatibility, which can be useful for using devices without removing them.

The materials used in winter hiking mittens significantly affect their warmth, durability, and water resistance. Common materials include synthetic insulation for warmth, leather for durability and grip, and waterproof membranes to keep hands dry. Choosing the right combination of materials can enhance comfort and performance during cold weather hikes.

Insulation is crucial in winter hiking mittens as it helps retain body heat and keeps your hands warm in cold conditions. Different types of insulation, such as down or synthetic fibers, offer varying levels of warmth and packability. It's essential to choose mittens with adequate insulation based on the expected temperatures and duration of your hike.

Heated mittens can be a great option for winter hiking, especially for those who are prone to cold hands or plan to hike in extremely low temperatures. These mittens typically feature battery-powered heating elements that provide additional warmth. However, it's important to consider battery life and weight, as well as the potential need for charging during longer hikes.

Choosing the right size of mittens for winter hiking is essential for comfort and warmth. Mittens should fit snugly but not too tight, allowing for some air circulation to keep hands warm. It's also helpful to consider layering options, as some hikers prefer to wear thin liners underneath for added warmth and dexterity.

Mittens generally provide better warmth than gloves because they allow your fingers to share heat, reducing the risk of cold extremities. They also tend to be less bulky, making them easier to wear with other gear. However, mittens may limit dexterity compared to gloves, so it's important to balance warmth and functionality based on your hiking needs.
