One of the best parts of this jacket is how well it holds up in gusty conditions. Even without layering heavily, I could feel noticeably less wind- chill than with my old softshell. Very happy with that. The hand pockets are secure, the sleeve pocket is handy for small stuff, and mesh pocket bags help with breathability. I got this for an upcoming trip to Ireland. I am 5' 1 '' and a size 25 waist but I got a size S so I can still wear sweaters underneath. It's so cute and exactly what I was looking for! So far I 've worn it during heavy rain while walking my dog and I stayed completely dry. I like the little flap on the hood so rain does n't get in your face as easily. I like the adjustable waist and hood. I would 've preferred buttons or some other way to secure the front flap as opposed to the velcro but it is n't that big of a deal to me. It feels well made and is warm without making me hot. It does look like a heavier coat because of the insolation but it's pretty light.

I have 5 days of skiing on the jacket in weather from sunny/warm to heavy snow. The fabric breathability is perfect for sidecountry/in- bounds skiing, but a touch heavy if you 're looking for a backcountry jacket. Great windproofing while still breathing. I am 5'11, 165lbs, with broad shoulders. I bought the medium and it can be worn with a puffy underneath comfortably. Not baggy, but still free range of movement. A touch more room on the shoulders would have suited me a bit better. There are a ton of useful pockets, no shortage. Zippers are easy to access, pit zips are a bit cumbersome however. Velcro on the cuffs is easy to adjust with different gloves.

This jacket served me well for 10 years of steady use every winter/fall and I finally replaced it. The quality is superb, the new Pertex Shield on the shoulders/arms gives it a much more durable feel. It has a premium feel in the hand and is a nice blend of weight/durability. Fits great with layers underneath, but also works well as a mid- layer under a shell. I 'm a fan of the new color options too. In summary, this is a durable, lightweight, packable and versatile jacket that does its job in the back- country but transitions seamlessly to the front- country. Highly recommended.

I like the cut of OR jackets. I am 6 ’ 1 ” 235. The Helium Down does not disappoint regarding warmth. It has that soft down feeling with added structural integrity where one might carry a pack. The gusseting in the arm allow for a full range of motion without much rise. I have long arms and can still draw out without the jacket tightening too much in the back. If for some reason I found myself in dire need of more warmth I could wear it underneath a jacket or shell because it could compress enough to almost be a base layer and not sacrifice its loft. At which point I am certain to roast.

Love that this uses a fairly high fill power down( 800+), making it warm and space/weight efficient. I have higher fill power items like MH ghost whisperer UL( 1000 FP), but most UL garments use fragile fabrics and do n't have any weather protection, so they 're really limited to cold, dry weather. The Helium Down Jacket has weather resistance in key areas due to the Pertex Diamond Fuse panels, which makes it more versatile. It wo n't be a great outer layer if you 're expecting heavy rain, but I wear it by itself in a light mist or under a shell if heavy rain is expected. The Pertex panels are a little crinkly, but not as loud as some reviews suggest. I found the sizing to be accurate. This is quickly becoming a staple of my wardrobe from fall through spring. [ I really enjoyed the stretch- fit feature, I could actually be active and use my arms without the jacket riding up. Then matte- like finish is fantastic and a lot more subtle than the Ghost Whisperer finish, with a soft yet durable feel. Plenty of pockets for everything you 'd need to stash away and the chest pocket fits a rather large cellphone, I use the Galaxy S8+ with an OtterBox case so this should fit pretty much any phone on the market. I have yet to be in freezing temps but at low 40s with wind the StretchDown jacket kept me very arm, the seam welded baffles do their job. I would absolutely recommend this jacket after reviewing the Ghost Whisperer as well as options from Patagonia and Arc'teryx I decided to buy the Mountain Hardwear StretchDown Jacket and I do not regret my decision.

[ This is my favorite jacket. I probably wear it more often than I should, to be entirely honest. It's just so darn versatile, though, that I find myself grabbing this jacket in nearly any situation. The fit is perfect and the angled baffles look great on anyone. The baffles themselves are much more firm than most puffy jackets, which just feels fantastic every time you throw it on. The material is durable, and the range of motion is completely non- restricting. Interestingly, I was especially impressed by the way this jacket feels when moving between being outside/inside. I 've ridden my bicycle outside and felt toasty warm while wearing this well below 30 degrees+ windchill, but then when I go inside at 70 degrees it still feels comfortable enough that I do n't need to take it off. I think everyone should have a Stretchdown. Mine has completely changed the way I think about down jackets.

Impressive 3- 1 after wearing out my North Face 3- 1 system I have wore for years. Bought this to replace it and I am happy with what my research settled upon. Love the zip out silk liner as a stand alone lite duty jacket, a nd the shell works excellent as a rain cover. This is a great system for a beginner or an expert in the field or out on the town. Size runs true and is a little longer than expected but I did not mind the extra length to cover my hind end.

I 've had my RG foray for a little over 3 years and it's been pretty good to me. I 've mostly worn the puffer by itself in cool weather. There's little wind resistance to it, so be warned. Otherwise it's a good standalone layer on even the coldest days for short exposure times. I 've had to wear the jacket on several rainy days, and the full system during an Easter trip to the UK in '23. Scotland, Wales, and northern England are n't known for great weather in March and this trip was no exception. We endured near constant wind and periodic rain& sleet. When we went to London it rained for several hours one day and we were in it at its hardest. The fabric shed water well without getting soaked, as I 'd expect from OR. All in all, it's a good buy.

I needed a jacket that would perform in a variety of extreme environments when going inside was not an option. This jacket filled this role perfectly and has kept me dry while exploring the north Maine Woods more recently while hiking through the cloud rain forest in Costa Rica. On a cool rainy day, you can keep warm with all the vents closed and a puffy underneath. While in warmer humid weather, just open the massive vents on the sides and keep dry while still being able to `` breath '' and stop sweat from soaking you from the inside out. It is very weight efficient, easily packed, and well cut for the active user. The chest pocket is also a favorite feature of mine to safely store a cell phone while on the move yet keeping it easily accessible.

This past weekend I assisted in the rescue 7 people who were capsized in a pontoon boat. I dove into the water with phone and all in the pocket of this jacket. After the scary event ended I took my phone out of my pocket and was shocked to still see the phone screen activated! The phone still needed about 7 hours to completely dry out and let me charge it but it ’s completely fine now. Obviously this jacket isn ’ t meant to be submerged but the saving the phone of it all felt worth mentioning. The sleeves are a bit long but they do have velcro to adjust and tighten them around the wrist. It's roomy but great for layering, though I think if he were ever to pull out the inner layer of the thin down shell, the outer jacket would be huge on him. The length is great for his longer torso, it covers his butt well. He had requested no hood and this one is detachable( not easy to find a decent ski jacket without a hood!) so another win!

But the biggest selling point for me with this jacket is its' versatility. I am easily kept warm in New York winter with the full coat, but on days when it's milder, I love that I can easily just take off the blue outer shell and only use the inner piece-- which is also a great stand alone jacket. It fits true to size and looks like how it does on the website. I 'm 5' 3 '' and 135 lbs and bought a Medium and it fits great. Not oversized or too tight anywhere. But it is form fitting. So if you like a baggier look and feel, I 'd go up a size. The quality of material and the zippers is excellent, and it's really easy to put the jacket back together if you choose to separate the layers. The only things that would make this jacket better for me is if there was a hood for the rain/snow, although the high neck helps a lot. Aside from that I wish the zippers did n't zip from the bottom up in case something falls out; but to be fair, nothing has fallen out before.

I ’ ve owned 2 other puffers( Patagonia and Rab). The Helium combined my favorite aspects of both jackets into one and improved on some other aspects. Only thing I can ’ t attest to is the jackets durability. I ’ ve had my Patagonia puffer for nearly 10 years, hoping this one lasts that or more! Pros:- lightweight but very warm( tested in the 20 ’s and 30F so far, expecting to see how it fairs in the negatives soon)- hand pockets are lined and warm- hood is a must have for long bouts in cold weather IMO- phone pocket on the chest fits a new pro max IPhone with a case on it- large internal open pockets, probably won ’ t use much but nice additional feature- the hood and shoulders have a water repellant material Con: My only negative is the sizing, I ’ m 6 ’ 200lbs and usually wear an XL for jackets. A large would have fit more athletically with room for another layer underneath. I live in a place it can get to- 50 or colder so having space to layer is wicked helpful, but an XL is a tough too big.

[ Bought mid Oct. I live in Alaska wanted something good for hiking, xcountry sking, walking dogs I was not disappointed. Im 5' 2 '' 125lb I got a size S, fits great with room to layer. Ive been on one hike, temp was 30- 35F I layered with a columbia fleece kept me nice& warm. Also great for walking dogs around the block. I love all the deep pockets, fits my cell& keys perfectly. I havent tested in temps below zero yet or rainy conditions but I 'm sure if you added a shell over it would be fine

[ I 'm 5' 7 '' and about 170lbs. I bought a large to put multiple layers under for alpine use and the size was just about right. A little snug down around the hip area, but okay. I liked the jacket so much that I decided to buy a medium for `` around the town '' use, but the medium was so tight at the hips that it would n't drop all the way down. Had to return it. Fits much tighter than the Interstellar. Otherwise, great shell.

[ Unlike most of the rain jackets I tried on this cycle, OR has the cut right on this, I am 6' 185, so I really should n't be swimming in a L, but most I did, not OR.. Perfect. Thickness suggests it will last.

[ Fit is superb. Comfort and breathability is awesome. Never a drop of water incursion. However: on the coldest of days, the gustiest winds sneak through. Fabric has seen some ski tumbles with no hint of damage. I think of this as my soft hardshell. So I wouldn ’ t describe it as “ bombproof ”, but it ’s a go- to for anything short of truly severe weather.

[ This jacket is of excellent quality. If you want to keep water out and are going to be in cooler temps I highly recommend it. I am using year- round for cost saving with layers or not. If I had the means I would use this only for colder temperatures which I think is what it was designed for.
