I 've been using this Surge backpack since 2019 and it has been great! I 've heard my family's thoughts on the newer model of the same backpack and they are not as impressed. The straps are more prone to breaking and the seams have started tearing pretty early in the life of their backpack. This being said, my older model has been so great! It's gone through years of hauling notebooks, folders, textbooks, water bottles, and clothes for practice after school. One of the shoulder straps did begin to tear last year( 2024) slightly but a quick stitch- job has got it back to working order. I would definitely buy a North Face backpack again!

I bought this for my first mountaineering excursion. A nearly 9000 foot elevation in Patagonia of Cerro Creston. Held my crampons and ice axe perfectly during the 1 hr+ hike to the base of the mountain and super comfortable to wear. Love the attached gear loops around the waist band. Side straps held my mountaineer boots very solidly until needed. Functional, lightweight, simplistic, and efficient.

Simple and well designed. I really like having the ability to remove the lid and strip the pack down. Everything you need is there without extra fluff. The Speed 30's versatility and simplicity is its greatest asset.

Black Diamond's Speed Packs provide everything I need and appreciate in a trad pack without any unnecessary fluff 'n' stuff added. I 'm a tall man with a short torso, and the smaller size sits nicely, even while wearing a harness and climbing multipitch routes. The pack also carries a rope nicely, with five compression straps keeping it in place. While I have n't used this pack for skiing, I can strongly recommend it for all- day climbing adventures.

[ I bought this pack not too long ago and have only taken it out once, but I have no complaints so far. The material and build quality seem to be durable. In my pack I can fit my shoes( on the outside), harness, a 70m rope, belay devices, anchor materials, and a helmet with some room to spare. I can also put smaller items( keys and phone) in the large brain on top of the pack. I would assume if you fully optimized space, you could additionally put clothes on the bottom of your pack or add draws. I also love how this pack can transfer the weight onto your hips and really support whatever you packed. Overall, I 'm really happy with my purchase!

[ Had this crag bag for a couple weeks now. Roomy. Holds my 60 m rope, QuickDraws, water and lunch. Especially like the mesh pocket on the outside for shoes and lid bag for phone, snacks and even a small zippered pocket for keys/wallet. Nothings getting lost at the crag. We ’ ll balanced with the rope in the bottom and waist belt on. Makes those treks to the crag less daunting.

[ A simple, rock- centric piece of equipment. The size is perfect for a day of cragging or multi pitch routes. The shape and design make it super easy to load and unload. It's streamlined without all the fussy straps and buckles that typically get hung up in tight approaches or hauling. No ice axe loops either, this is a pure rock pack. I like that the main compartment is accessed with only one top zipper... there's no reason to have a zillion ways to get inside a 40L bag. I can load it with a large rack and webbing, a rope, water bottle and jacket with room to spare. It feels solid on my back, and carries great. The top compartment is roomy, and also accessible with a single zipper, and there is a realistically- sized zippered pocket for iPhone and/or keys. The waterproof outer material seems bomber, and built like a tank, except for the webbing strap on the waist belt which seems a bit thin, but no big deal. The waist belt itself is sturdy enough and includes small gear loops on each hip. The included mini tarp is a thoughtful touch, though I personally wish it were larger. Outside mesh pockets for shoes and chalk bag are a nice convenience. There are other similar packs out there, but this one was a big bang for the buck. Lastly, it's cool looking, I get compliments all the time.

[ I ’ ve had this for a few weeks now. I love that it fits my 60m rope, draws, three pairs of shoes, harness, and any other misc gear. Very comfortable with the waist straps. They really transfer the load from your shoulders to your hips. I haven ’ t used it outside to test durability yet. Love the shoe pouch as well. Good features, large, comfortable, and great price.

[ My old crag pack which had survived 10 years of hard use, multiple trips through the desert and a bear attack in the Adirondacks was finally in need of replacement. I ordered one of these and it seems really nice but the new “ one size ” is useless if you ’ re less than 5 ’ 8 ”. I had to return it.

As an ultralight Backpacker, I leave my honest review here. First, I have to say that I was excited when I got this backpack; the fabrics and the implementation are outstanding excellent job Black Diamond. The fast backpack idea with those extra shoulder straps makes this backpack ideal. Not only is this one waterproof or almost, but it is merely one of the best backpacks I ever owned. Believe it or not, I have tried several UL backpacks in my career. The only downside I see is that the shoulder pocket with the zipper is too tiny to hold a standard- sized cell phone comfortably. If I had a bigger one, I could guarantee it would never fit inside.

GR
I have n't used this pack but it looks great, with excellent materials, pockets and overall construction. It also seems to tick most boxes for ultra runners who may be doing multi- day events requiring a lot of mandatory gear. Some runners may question the design choice of having only one side of the vest strap capable of carrying a 500ml soft flask. Perhaps this is the preferred option for fastpacking but having capacity for two soft flasks in addition to two zippered pockets on either side like the BD Distance 15 pack would be ideal, at least for ultra runners.

This is a really large backpack with many compartments and quite a bit of adjustability. I was really impressed with how light this was compared to it's size. Lots of padding on the straps, and quite a few handles to lift it when you are n't wearing it. Overall I 'm very impressed.

Haven ’ t used it yet but in theory, this should be a Great pack and possibly the lightest per volume pack made other than skimo packs. Also, this pack can carry fat skis. My Volkl Shiro ’s that are 151 in the tip and 129 in the tail can fit in either the a frame or diagonal cary. Plus the internal Velcro pocket is wide enough to fit a DK impact spine protector.
5
Diana G.
Fantastic design. I love the separate avalanche gear pocket and the easy open and closure. The material is great and does not get wet in many snow conditions. Very comfortable for my smaller 5 ’ 1 frame. I just wish the smaller sized pack came with a helmet strap like the others:)

This is the best ski and multi- sport pack I have used. Simple, durable, and light. Thoughtful features& clean lines. A very multifunctional backpack. Very light. My height is 184 cm, I need to get used to putting it on and taking it off, I would take a little more volume for myself. Not considering my size preferences, this is a great backpack.

Scofield W.
I thought it would be a great summit backpack for snow mountain adventures, extremely lightweight, and suitable for carrying an ice axe. It would be even better if it included a waist strap. Very suitable for packing into a large backpack. Currently trying it for short- distance day hikes, very satisfied.

JONAH N.
You can go to war with this thing. They say it ’s an ultra pack, but it is also the most comfortable pack I ’ ve ever used for MTB ’ ing. As far as how much stuff it stores, it hits way above its weight! You can pack this thing to the gills. It ’s also surprisingly water tight! I ’ ve carried this in downpours only to find my stuff perfectly dry. For light packs w/o frames, I will never buy a different pack for the rest of my life. I now own a distance 8 and 12 because they are so great.

My old first- gen Distance 8 is finally wearing out after thousands of miles, hundreds of mountains, 100k PRs, snow and rain, gallons of sweat and pounds of salt, who knows what else. This iteration of the Distance 8 is like an old friend with a few useful refinements. So comfortable I grab it even for a basic 30 minute outing if I want to go hands- free with water or phone, but also absolutely reliable for the biggest adventures.

This is an upgrade over my previous vest from a different retailer. Big roomy pockets on the front for flasks with elastic loops that go over the lid to prevent it from sinking down in the sleeve over time. I love the zippered pocket on the left for my phone and the mesh pockets on either side for snacks. The bag has an easy top cinch at the top and is super roomy for the other essentials and then some. There is probably enough space in the pack itself for an emergency overnight. The fit is luxuriously comfortable, feels secure with very little bouncing and jostling. The only aspect of the pack I have n't used is the pole sleeves on either side of the pack or the elastic loops for lashing poles to the outside. They seem like they would work very well with the distance z poles, but not my old school backpacking poles. Really though, this is a great buy, I am extremely satisfied with the fit, feel, and quality of the running pack.

We recently embarked on challenging hikes through Lassen National Park and Mount Tam with this exceptional backpack, and it exceeded our expectations in every way. The backpack strikes a perfect balance between ample storage space for all the necessary essentials and a lightweight, durable design that does n't weigh you down during long treks. The color scheme is attractive, although more color options would have been a welcome addition. The waist belt and double sternum straps provided a snug and secure fit, ensuring the pack stayed stable even during demanding trails. We found the outside pockets to be surprisingly useful, providing easy access to frequently needed items. The zippers worked flawlessly, and their seals effectively protected our belongings from rain and moisture. Despite hiking in 80º temperatures, the backpack remained remarkably breathable, keeping us comfortable throughout our journey. This backpack is a reliable companion for outdoor adventures, and we highly recommend it to fellow nature enthusiasts.

[ This backpack is great! It holds the weight evenly and while I was only out for a few hours I had no issues with it at all. It is very comfortable and the elastic spring steel really helped with keeping the sweat on my back to a minimum. There are so many pockets, and it comes with a tarp to cover the backpack if it rains. The straps are all super adjustable which makes it even more comfortable. I did n't understand the significance of a female- specific pack until I got this one-- I had been using a 75L+ unisex/ male pack for 10+ years and it always felt just a little off. The first time putting this one on, fully loaded, for a 5 day backpacking trip, I realized what a game- changer it was. Originally I was concerned going down in size by 5L, but all the pockets and stash points make up for it. It packs much better than my previous pack and the weight is distributed better and sits on my hips more comfortably. Definitely recommend!

Just got this pack as a replacement for my very old and trusted Arial 75. Despite being a guy I got the women's as my last one was a women's and it fit me so well. I am 5' 7 '' '' and 155#. Super comfortable and easy to adjust. I have just used it so far for day backcountry skiing. It easily synched down to a small size and was narrow with no wobble for skiing in the trees. Lots of pockets, I especially like the double pockets in the lid for sorting small stuff.

[ I love this pack! Perfect size for a full day out of summiting or ice climbing. Plenty of room to add gear for whatever conditions the mountain decides to throw at you. You definitely get a perfect fit based on the provided adjustments and the feel if the pack distributes the weight beautifully to not weigh you down so that your energy isn ’ t spent by the weight. The fit is part of you so when you are calculating every move on a ridge thousands of feet up, you don ’ t have to worry about your pack. [ My wife loves this backpack. She ’s 5 ’ even, which means a lot of frames can be too big. Osprey put together a great fit, and she loves the hip belt system. The pack also seems really well- made.

Spent three months backpacking in Europe upon my retirement, at age 65, with this wonderful Osprey backpack! We traveled in all kinds of weather and used all modes of transportation! Also, have been backcountry camping in Canada, California, and Colorado! She still looks new after a busy 10 years on and off the trails! I am currently looking to downsize to a smaller Osprey backpack…walking the Camino in a few months! Only an Osprey works for me!!

Bought this pack for a short backpacking trip on the Napali Coast. I have lower back pain so I needed a pack that distributed the weight very well. My pack was about 30- 35lbs and I made it the entire trip without any pain or even soreness in my low back. It was quite incredible considering the many elevation changes- I 'm definitely impressed. I will say that toward the end on our hike out my shoulders began to cramp up so I had to do some adjusting to the straps but I think it's just I did n't have it set right. I really really love this pack and it's worth the investment!

[ Our first packaging trip, and it was perfect! I tried on a few different packs, and this one was by far the most comfortable. Though it was uncomfortable under the straps at times, as I suspect they all would have been considering the weight I was carrying, I did not have any pains or soreness after removing the pack. Alsp, lots of pockets for organization and places to attach items to the outside of the pack.

My torso is 17 '' so I purchased the S/M size expecting it to be on the shortest setting. I found I needed to have it just under the longest setting to fit me correctly with the middle of the hip belt on my iliac crest. I think you might be able to squeeze into this pack if your torso is 19 '' maximum. Easily the most comfortable pack I have tried on, very happy with my purchase.

[ Just returned from the BWCA with my Aether 65. This is a nice pack that worked well for a 4 day self supported journey deep in the Boundary Waters of Minnesota. Our trip included 5 portages with 3 having quite a bit of undulation. The pack was weighed down with 44lbs of gear and was comfortable( as much as 44lbs of gear can be, definitely dropping some weight on the next trip). I liked it because I typically start trips like this fresh and strong and have my pack set up to that posture with quick( on the fly) adjustments being made as I ’ m flagging from hiking and paddling for hours. Nice pack that is well thought out with all the features you need and none that are useless. Both of my sons were wearing the same pack with zero complaints. Nice product that ’s worth the investment.

[ Have only taken this pack on one trek so far but it was great. Very comfortable and distributes weight nicely. I love how convient it is to access the inside of the pack with the front pouch. Only complaint is the water bottle pocket- it ’s very difficult to get a 1. 5 liter Nalgene in and out when the pack is full.

Jem J.

[ Bought this a few weeks ago for a backpacking trip to Olympic National Park and it ’s been great so far! I ’ m a 5 ’ 9 ” woman with athletic/curvy build. Thoughtful compartments, detachable smaller pack, built in rain cover, and seems pretty lightweight to me. I love the green color of the pack and the neon green color of the rain cover. My other pack is a 45 Osprey from 4 years ago and this frame seems more supportive/better padded.

After procrastinating for several years I decided to get a new ski pack. Loaded it up and loved the fit and the way it carries a load. My mind struggled a bit with the lack of pockets for miscellaneous stuff, but I have worked that out. If you are thinking about this pack, do it!
5
David S.
This pack is amazing. Everything is `` in the right place ''. Helmet, shovel, probe, water bladder perfectly snug. Interior space is plenty for food, skins, puffy layer and shell. And most importantly the way the pack moves with your body while skiing is magical... I truly forget that it is on my back!

I ’ ve taken this backpack to two different 30 day trips. And I have been through every single situation, terrain( minus snow), 10+ flights( a few made made check in bag) camped, hiked, walked through beaches, visited hostels. Hours in airports and this backpack is A beast. I stuff the heck out of this bag. It packs like a 50L. The top most pocket is so big. Can fit a toiletry bag and more. Still looks new, quality is superb. Passport fits perfectly in hip pockets and snacks and earbud case. Very light and comfortable. My bag was roughly 25- 40 pounds at all times. [ I ’ ve used this bag for years and it is indestructible. I left a banana in it for weeks and the smell was destructive to my nose. Had to clean it many times before the smell went away. It ’s sill like new on the inside. It does not have a strap or method to lash a rope on the outside. It ’s a haul bag but also a crate pack for me. I would like that option. So i bought a BD creek 50. Regarding. Comfort, it ’s not. It ’s a haul bag with shoulder straps and removable waist belt. I do love it. It has lasted with no damage in the rock environment. [ I was looking for a crag bag that could also be used to haul gear on a 2 day big wall. The Quarter Dome rides the fine line I was looking for between massive and agile handling. I can fit all my trad/aid gear inside and have a little extra room.
5

[ as my climbing knowledge and direction continues to improve, I required to purchase a larger more practical store for all my climbing gear. The Metolius Quarterdome is generous in space allowing for storage packs if required, its weight is tolerable for its size. I had searched for a relatively practical sized bag whereby the Quarterdome was the correct fitment for my needs. Metolius make larger and smaller sizes in similar to the Quarterdome and will cater for any required service need. I 'm certain this bag will be in continuous use and look forward with excitement to be part of this amazing beautiful sport of climbing

[ I bought this bag a few weeks ago and have been able to take it to a few crag sessions. So far, the bag has performed great! I have been able to fit all of my gear, rope, water, clothes and lunch with ease. Solid outer construction looks like it will stand up to a beating but have not been able to test that yet. A nice feature is that it stands upright independently which makes loading it easier. The shoulder straps and waist strap are also pretty confortable, more so than I was expecting for the type of bag this is. Not quite as comfortable as my backpacking pack, but I would n't expect this from the collapsible and stowable straps. Overall, I am very happy with this bag and would recommend it to someone looking for a good crag bag. Probably a little small for a big wall but honestly have not tried it for that.

[ Got this pack looking for an all arounder for cragging, hiking, long multi pitch days, skiing, and quick travel trips. Seems to fit the bill pretty well so far, nice and light weight and the stashable hip belt works better than expected. The only downside is the bottom set of compression straps on the side are permanently fixed( would be nice if they were clipped like the top set so they could be used to really tighten a rope down for long approaches). All in all a good pack for what it does, perfect balance of weight and features.

Cute, holds all the essentials for a day trip, or for work( holds my tablet, 2 cans of Yerba Mate and a small first aid kit among other things), and it's tough.
