If money is no object than get yourself a catfish series Abu, if money is tight this reel will work well if you are familiar with using baitcasting reels. Bought this reel for a black Friday event in 2018 and have used this reel on an ugly stick catfish rod and I 'm very impressed with it. The only things I had to do is break the reel down and re- oil it and change the line on the reel but I always re- oil my reels before using for the 1st time. I highly recommend this reel for the price. I restrung this reel with 65 lb braid and it's held up great but always back it with good mono line.

I have several larger baitfeeder spinning reels for surf fishing, including a Penn Fierce III 6500 and an Okuma Avenger 8000 series. I was looking for something smaller/lighter but still tough enough for medium duty saltwater. Great reels. I have 2 and am shopping for another. Wo n't buy it here because they do not have the higher gear ratio in the left hand retrieve model. Only 4 stars because it comes with combat grips instead of Winn knobs. But, I have swapped the combat grips for Winn round knobs. I even contacted Lew's and was able to get black and gold end caps for the knobs. I have one on a TP1 Black and the other on a Custom Lite. I made a decision to purchase this reel because they were on sale. I am a Shimano guy. I bought one and put it on my most abused application. 65 pound braid. On my frog rod. One year later I purchased 2 more due to apparent toughness of the first. Put them on my second and third most used rods. Fast forward two more years, I have replaced all of my Shimano reels. This is my 3rd baitcasting reel and still consider myself a beginner. It was incredibly easy to dial everything in! Casting it was smooth and the only backlashes I experienced was just due to inexperience. After I dialed everything in, I used my thumb to cast and did n't experience any backlash. Eventually, I was able to cast it without my thumb and did n't experience any backlash! It's an incredible reel and would highly recommend. Definitely beginner friendly as long as you understand the basics of dialing in. I threw a bunch of different lures and hardly had to adjust. Just a great experience overall. The price is a steal!
