After getting a little too turned around in the BWCA on my last trip I decided I prefer my canoe adventures without heckling from wife and we settled on purchasing this bad boy! Easy to use and durable. Battery life is a big plus too as I had this thing on and open most of the time on all of our paddles across big water. It gave me the peace of mind I needed by making it virtually impossible to get lost out there. The Garmin BWCA overlay maps are totally worth it too if you are thinking about it. [ I bought the eTrex 32x last month. I especially like the 'tracks' feature where I can see exactly the path I have just traveled. This feature has been really helpful on BLM land where their might be many crisscrossing off road dirt paths. Finding the correct ones that you took previously is critical. The tracks feature makes it easy. This GPS is also super accurate. In my initial test I took it on a walk with my dog. Looking back at the tracks I could see where I walked on the sidewalk vs. on the road vs the other side of the road( single lane road). Overall a great little GPS. The only downside is that the screen seems a little small, but that is what you get when you purchase a small unit for outdoor use.

[ So far, this little unit seems like a great item. Battery life appears good so far, and it has preloaded maps that will work for most. Once I got used to the programs to make maps, paths and such.. I was able to put together a very good set up for an up coming trip. The bad or expected if you already know about GPS's. They are built on like a decade's old tech and they function like a flip phone. These day's most people have their phone on them and generally it works better if you have planned ahead to throw on a ton of downloaded maps, have a ruggedized case and super long battery life. I personally bought this because on a recent trip, we got a bit off of the map we had. We had a general idea where we were going but I had to try to bring up my phone a few times to get maps and positioning. It was lucky that we were on a hill in a bald so I could get signal at all. long story short, my phone battery took a hit and we got lucky that we were able to find the appropriate maps and got back on course. This light weight device will allow me to get my position, look at local trails and measure distance. That's worth the money and the weight.

It is also a sharper display. The E has all the features I need. Most of the general population that buys these are not doing extreme hiking or marathons and therefore the E has enough for the gen pop. What I think they dropped the ball on is still having a two week battery. It ’s the same battery life as my original instinct. They cheaped out on that. It ’s should be at least a month battery. The only other “ like ” I would want is to have the torch( flash light) on this one. Outside of that. I really like the watch.

This is my second inReach- replaced my original Mini with this. The Mini was actually very good- I used it to evacuate a guy from the Grand Canyon last spring- but I hated the Earthmate app and was quite disappointed that the Mini was effectively orphaned by Garmin in that ancient app. It would not communicate with my Garmin watch either. This fixes both problems- the Messenger app is much better and I get notifications on my watch. Battery life is better, it is a USB- C connection( rather than micro), it is almost as small, and still has a tiny screen if your phone dies in an emergency. I do wish the lanyard hole was larger and the device was more thoughtful about how you 'd connect it/mount it/tether it to something else. Common to both devices is being on Iridium rather than Globalstar. I had a pair of Spots years ago and thought they were awful and unreliable with no for- sure confirmation that a message was received and many places in the world without coverage. InReach/Iridium is just solid and reliable everywhere. So those of you that think an iPhone is the cats pajamas for this, well it is on Globalstar. Enough said.

It ’s compact, easy to use, and connects seamlessly to my phone, with fantastic battery life and affordable monthly plans that are well worth the investment for safety. One of my favorite features is the ability to send a location update every 10 minutes, which reassured my family that as long as I was moving, I was okay. Of course, you can turn this off to conserve battery when needed. The only minor downside is that occasionally, when sending a message while moving or if the device is covered, it can take longer to send, but stopping in an open area without tree cover speeds it up, so it ’s not a dealbreaker. If you spend any time in the backcountry—especially solo—get a satellite communication device. The inReach Messenger is my top choice, but no matter what, having something for emergency communication is a must. Just bite the bullet and get one—it could save your life.

I haven ’ t worn my Apple Watch since I got the S70. That ’s how good it is. Loaded with great features for golf and everyday use. Can ’ t say enough about how much I love the watch but the Garmin Golf App is terrible. It looks like Garmin came up with this app sometime around 2005 and hasn ’ t updated it since. Visually unappealing and so clunky to use. My biggest gripe is not being able to go back in and fix yardage mistakes. For example it does a good job with shots leading up to the greens but once there it kind of just guesses where your approach shot landed. When you edit the shot later, you can ’ t move it to where it actually ended up. There ’s a “ edit distance ” button but it doesn ’ t do anything. This can throw off your club distance averages by 20- 30 yards. Come on Garmin, catch up to the other shot tracking apps out there. You have a fantastic watch product matched up with garbage software.

Only used my helix 9 four times so far. The cursor sometimes jumps 3 or 4 contour when trying to follow the contour, then sometimes indexes smoothly about 1/2 contour line at a time the way it should. Today I checked the water temperature and my Helix said it was 188 degrees and changing rapidly in the range of 195 to 175 degrees!!! I 'd been on the water for about 3 hours. It eventually fixed itself and read 46. 7 degrees which was probably correct! Not too happy so far, we 'll see!?!?

In the last year I switched electronic brands and chose to put all Humminbirds in my boat. Personally I like the visibility of the screens better. It is easier for me to recognize fish when using down and side imaging. Without a doubt the screen is a huge improvement compared to the other brand I used to use.

My 1030 plus decided took on water on a wet ride and had to be replaced. I got the Edge 1040 thinking it would be very similar and did not expect much difference. I was pleasantly surprised at the improvements in the unit. First thing I noticed were the icons on the data screens that make it easier to find things like elevation, grade, gears, and next turn direction( see first two screen shots). Probably the best improvement is in the Climb Pro screen( screen shot 3). Climbs are automatically detected based on the road you are riding( previously climbs just showed up on preloaded routes). The climb pro screen now shows you the map along with the graph. Includes the grade you are currently at and remaining distance, grade and altitude gain left in the climb. Nice feature! I like how the meter pairs with Di2 shifters as seen on the last screen shot.

We just moved to Tennessee and am completely unfamiliar with the trail system here and rely on the maps to keep us from getting lost. I bought the 1040 a few weeks ago when my 1030 finally gave out after 5. 5 years of almost daily use. Sure the 1030 had its share of glitches. It would sometimes seize and stop recording during rides, requiring a reboot each time. I had to leave it on the charger all night, every night, otherwise it would randomly turn itself on and discharge the battery by morning. But when it worked I was happy with it so I decided to stay with Garmin where I ’ ve been for many years with multiple devices. So far the 1040 has been great. The display and touchscreen are noticeably improved. I ’ m still discovering some of the functionality changes and how to operate them. However, I primarily use the basics and this 1040 is excelling with that. I ’ ve always been impressed with Garmin batteries on all my devices. And since this new 1040 stays off at night as it should, I can get at least three or four rides in on one charge. Looks like I ’ ll be saving on my electricity bill! The on/off button is more responsive and the device powers up quickly. I like that the device shuts itself off shortly after I download a ride to Connect. If I want to go back into the 1040 it ’s no big deal because it powers right up. Another noticeable difference from my 1030 is that rides download so much faster to the Connect app. I don ’ t need a bunch of bells and whistles, although the 1040 has plenty. I simply want my bike computers to work. So far this 1040 is doing just that.
