I 've gotten to take it out both XC skiing and on some winter hikes and it's the perfect size for an extra layer, snacks, first aid kit, and any other gear you might need on the trail. I love the magnet strip on the water bladder that nicely holds the bladder straw in space when not using it, and easy to drink out of while on the trail. The pockets are well thought out and easily accessible. I do wish the side water bottle pockets were a little larger to fit my nalgene, but definitely not a dealbreaker since it has the integrated bladder.

My travel hack is to wear this under my jacket but sling it to the side opposite the flight attendant when boarding and it works every time so I can have a backpack and duffel. We absolutely love this bag as our personal item( as long as it's not overstuffed, it fits easily under the seat) to bring our toddler's plane snacks, toys, tablet, and other travel essentials along with a smattering of items we want to keep on us instead of checking through. ` I am a 50 year old occasional hiker who has n't had a new pack since college. Just spent 3 days hiking in the Catskills with this pack on my back for 7- 8 hours a day and I love it. Plenty of space and super comfortable. I barely noticed I was even carrying a pack, had zero shoulder or back strain, and like the frame that allows for some airflow through the back area- a big plus hiking in 80+ degree weather. Never had to use the internal rainfly, but that was definitely a selling point for me. Highly recommend!

I 've been using this Surge backpack since 2019 and it has been great! I 've heard my family's thoughts on the newer model of the same backpack and they are not as impressed. The straps are more prone to breaking and the seams have started tearing pretty early in the life of their backpack. This being said, my older model has been so great! It's gone through years of hauling notebooks, folders, textbooks, water bottles, and clothes for practice after school. One of the shoulder straps did begin to tear last year( 2024) slightly but a quick stitch- job has got it back to working order. I would definitely buy a North Face backpack again!

It can be easily folded back up to fit inside. There are sturdy metal rods, with a heavy duty mesh piece on the back. It will definitely hold up when hiking. Firstly, this bag has a small plastic internal frame to provide structure. The frame is lightweight, yet sturdy enough for a fully packed bag. Because of the frame's assistance with weight distribution, everything felt lighter on my back. This bag also has many different pockets and straps for varied packing strategies. The straps on the bottom of the bag are perfect for a sleeping bag, ground mat, or small tent. Underneath those straps is a small pocket that holds an included rain cover to keep your bag totally dry during heavy rain. There is also a pocket on top of the bag for any small items you may need to access on the go, without opening or unpacking the rest of the bag. Finally, there is a pocket for a hydration bladder, so you can stay hydrated as you move. Some other useful features are the emergency whistle on the chest strap, the included strap management bungees( so those leftover strap ends after adjustment are n't hanging everywhere), and the water bottle pockets on the sides. Overall, I would give this product a 5/5. Met or exceeded all of my expectations. I would highly recommend this bag to anybody who is a frequent camper or hiker.

Still getting used to it but currently on a trip in Italy with this backpack. At first it seems like you need to lay it flat to access or put away anything. However, when on the go, you can just open the zippers on the top to access the different departments, and by only opening the zipper on the top, I was able to create another pocket and start using it like a normal backpack, just throwing things in there instead of opening another zipper. All in all really nice quality. I picked the option where they just give you any color and I ’ m really pleased with it. Fits Norse Atlantic Airways personal size dimensions( and Ryanair too, though I haven ’ t been on that flight yet).

I 've used this to train with 35lb water sack on multiple day hikes and 2 day summit trip to Mt. Rainier. This pack can hold more weight, and highly adjustable. I 'm 5' 1 '' '', 103lb very petite person, and I was able to have the torso adjusted to the shortest and the hip straps tight all the way to fit my short torso well. The floating divisor is easier and allows for more flexible storage, which I loved. I was able to fit a heavy duty sleeping bag and stuff the small empty areas with my snacks and dry socks, day gloves. Also for the panel cord loops I ended up buying elastic shock cords and cord locks for holding my ice axe, crampons, and my helmet. The only complaint I would have is the hip belt pockets could open a bit wider with longer zippers, and the backpack brain could be designed better in the way that it's easier to access and open from all angles when the pack is on the ground. Detachability would 've been nice.

This is currently my favorite bag. I 've had it for four or five years and its versatility never ceases to amaze me. It is my only bag on a one- week trip to warm climate, fitting 7 days of men's clothes, toiletries, plus laptop. It was a last- minute trip, so just wanted something I could fit under the seat on an airplane. Stowing the straps makes that so much easier than with other bags. You have to pack pretty minimally and I ditched the packing cubes to make everything fit, but it's working great so far. No room for water bottle, so I just bought one at the airport and carried it in my hand. I 've taken this on a few, long, strenuous day hikes, and when you cinch down the backpack straps tightly, it remains very comfortable, even with heavy water bottles in tow. Really amazing considering how little padding there is when compared to all the overbuilt bags coming out these days. Originally purchased for work and it excels at that too. Stands up very nicely when full-- but if only partially filled and the top pocket is crammed with stuff, then it wo n't stand too well, unless you have a laptop in it. My wife always compliments the bag all the time when she sees it on my back-- says that it's just somehow aesthetically pleasing. I love the shape and the material-- very nice to the touch and to the eyes, and also hardwearing and eco- friendly. Obviously more organization would be helpful, but then you 'd lose the beautiful simplicity. I find the top pocket is just enough for my trinkets and things-- keeps me from overpacking. If Fjallraven made one in 23 or 25 liters, I 'd buy one in a heartbeat. It has gone up about$ 6 in price since I bought it several years ago.

I have had this bag since 2017 and I beat the crap out of it and it has held up beyond my expectations.. The only thing I wish is that I could wash it better, because I am so hard on my stuff. I would put one more strip of padding on the bottom of the area for the laptop and two way zippers for the front little pocket, One other suggestion is for the side pockets where you can put your drinks it would be cool if one of those was a little longer, and you could zip it up.... This bag is very well made, nothing has come apart, nothing has had to be replaced and all the zippers are intact at almost 8 years since purchase with daily use!

We bought this for our 8th grader. She tried the smaller version of this backpack and it did not hold all of her stuff. The brand is iconic and has a great manufacturer warranty so no worries on that end for us. The shipping from Dick's was faster than Amazon so great job with that.
