I have not used the Trail Shot extensively, but it has worked very well when I have used it. I tend to use the MSR Hyperflow more frequently for speed, when weight is not a factor. The Trail shot is a little more labor intensive for my arthritic hands, but it is an excellent option.

5 Steve
Used this on multiple bikepacking trips with questionable and/or limited water on some occasions. It's lightweight and never let me down yet.

5 James P.
Compact, easy to use, best filter on the market!!! I had an issue with my original filter and your service department made it right. Great service, thank you!!!!

5 Richard K.
Love this filter!! It takes up almost no space in your pack. I really like the option to drink straight from it, and when I fill bottles, it goes quick. The plastic does n't 'rebound' as quick as I 'd like when filling, but it 'll still fill a few liters quickly. Definitely only good for 1 person, maybe 2. Would n't plan to have a whole team using it, but thats not what its for. Prefect for 1 person though. Great addition to my pack!

5 Helena
Used on one hike, works well so far. Vey comfortable to use( you do n't have to float rubber bottles empty- handedly in cold stream water at- 6C like with other filters). I hope it will last.

This filter is built to last. That's why I spent more to buy it. The sturdy build is a great feature and really, one of the only drawbacks-- it's a little heavy. I feel like Katadyn would benefit from a video of how to use and care for the filter. They could even put a QR code on the side for first- time users. I found a good fan- made video that taught me a lot. I found that the pump was easiest to use in the sitting position. Lots of elbow grease needed, but very effective. I see this filter lasting for years to come and I ca n't wait! NOTE- On day two, after taking it apart, it stopped pumping. I took it apart a few times and put it back together, but I was worried I had a lemon. After 3 or 4 times doing that, it started pumping again. Almost certainly user error--- just a heads up.

5 Wil B
Works perfectly, although a bit heavy for backpacking, the extra weight doesn ’ t bother me too much, for how well it works.

5 Michael D
Easy to use, taken it backpacking in the alps. Filled many 1L bottles with it.

5 Jeremy C
Used this for a week in the rockies. No problems or concerns. Could n't ask for a better filter.

5 Matthew E
extremely high quality and heavy duty. functions very nicely. nice flow rate. comes with a travel pouch, some in/out hoses, a sinker/sediment filter for the in hose, a filter- life gauge, and a scrub pad to clean the filter. the main assembly is a very premium device. very happy with my purchase. will be used as an emergency filter and a long term backpacking/survival filter. hoping for a long life for this device!

This has been a great unit that has served 8+ people during any of the hunts.

5 Bill F
The Katadyn Hiker Pro is my go- to water filter. It is easy to use and lightweight, as filters go. Get as much water out of it as possible and keep it in your sleeping bag in sub- freezing conditions. I love that the storage bag has a separate container for the output hose to keep it clean. Practice with it at home to get used to handling the intake hose and keeping the output hose out of contaminated water.

5 Rickey K
Easy to use and clean. comes with an adapter to fit standard wide mouth Nalgene bottles. Must have as a main filtration, backup, or if you just ca n't wait for the gravity filters. Great crew gear.

5 micah c
Compact. Easy to operate and maintain. Was a perfect tool on my backcountry hunt. Organization pouch is a great touch.

5 Michael R
Easy to use but not as quick as smaller squeeze bag type filters. Good if you want to divvy up the weight of your gear between people or plan on staying somewhere and filtering decent amounts of water. Never gotten sick using it and it's simple to operate so it's hard to complain. A good option overall

I will make a cup of water and use this to make the water safe for me to brush my teeth and drink. I will also use it for my water bottle whenever I refill it while abroad.

This product was great to use when I went hiking, there was no after taste when using the germicidal tablets. Another great thing is the convenience, both in weight and the color coded containers. This is a great alternative for carrying around plastic water bottles or having to worry about the cleanliness of water I 'm drinking.

5 MountainLadyNewMexico
I would recommend this product to anyone that ever goes outdoors! It is great and stands the test of time in hiking and backpacking and could save your life! It is easy to use, works fast to filter the water source and makes one feel confident in safe drinking water! Also fights against Giardia lamblia. This is a must have and can be kept in the car or backpack for any adventure or emergency!

5 I am warning you get it
I have not used this product. However, I can tell you that you have not lived until you have had `` Beaver Fever. '' You think you are dying. Then you really could. You can get it from the most crystal clear water. I gave it five stars for being a convenient way to prevent `` Beaver Fever. '' Anybody who hunts, fishes, camps, hikes or spends time outdoors in any form should have a product like this.

5 Jj the camper
We brought these camping because we were n't sure of the water sources. We ended up using them for river water and it was perfectly drinkable. I would bring these even with a good water source because you never know when things might change.

5 peekaydee
I have used these on several occasions while camping in the Shenandoah. I always bring them as back ups or if I ca n't use my steripen. With the neutralizing tablet, you ca n't taste any of the iodine. I will continue to carry this on every trip for peace of mind.

I bought this 2- 3 years ago for use on scout backpacking trips and emergency use during hurricane season. The thought was to have zero worries with water supply no matter where I was. The troop had another MSR filter with lower filtration pumping 1L per minute. Scouts became impatient and those were quickly abandoned to use mine. Win# 1! We recently took a long distance backpacking trip and most groups used micropur tablets for sterilization, but not wanting to wait used this filter instead for immediate water consumption without an altered taste. Water supplies were typically streams or in some cases cisterns from rain collection or pumps which still needed sterilization. Win# 2! One camp ran out of water in their cistern with zero streams for decent water nearby. I said not a problem and we filtered out of a cattle pond full of all kinds of bugs, algae and things no one wanted to deal with. This pump had zero issues and no one got sick. Win# 3! Lessons learned: most of the time, filtration just occurred over one or two days, this last trip was longer. If the nalgene was too tight, it would cause leaks between the filter and the water bottle. The same occurred if the gray ring at the bottom was too tight to the red cylinder on the filter. Loosening those connections brought everything into alignment with no leaks. A gentle tightening was all that was needed. After each trip, I do pump some clean water through the filter thinking one or 2 extra liters wo n't impact the life of the filter. I hang the filter to dry out the entire length of hose, and invert the filter section with fibers so it drains as well. I 've had zero issues with the performance of this filter and have full confidence whenever it is used. I still carry the maintenance kit with me, but it has yet to be used.

5 John V.
WE have been using the Guardian Purifier for several years now and just purchased out third one. We use it in a wilderness camp for up to 9 people for two weeks duration. We have never had a problem with the device or supplying ample water for each group. Several of our guests have purchased on for their own use after using the Guardian in our camp.

5 Elizabeth K.
Love the peace of mind! Easy to use& fills bottles quickly. We wanted one filter that we could use on any trip no matter where in the world, and no back- flushing makes this a dream.

5 Matt R.
I got this as a splurge for a 5 day loop in Tanner and out Grandview in April when the water was running high due to the past few years of Norovirus being prevalent in 2021 and 2022 for a group of 4 and it delivered with just a few minor issues. We did settle water for 1- 2 hours before filtering except for one day to filter directly after pulling from the river but I did n't note a difference in performance. For notes- we had the issue of leaking out the large filter housing O- ring when someone in the party overtightened it but we were able to resolve that after playing with it a bit( had us worried for a moment we were going to be onto tabs or boiling when it first started!!!) so it might be nice to make that note more visible in the manual as it was very easy to accidently do( I read on the website before going). We also had some leaking out of the back of the pump head as I have seen in other reviews( just a few drops here and there generally) and I was not able to resolve that even with slow pumping. Here I just made sure that the clean water bottle was fully attached so any drip from the back of the pump head would not go into the bottle. I would say we generally filtered much slower than 2. 5 L/min even with clean water( more like 0. 5- 1 L/min) as I had read that a common failure was the pump handle pin can break on this system so we generally tried not to apply too much pressure to the handle but instead ran slow and constant and tried to make sure not to exert too much pressure at the top and bottom of the pump rise. I overall still prefer gravity filters as they are just so much easier when we filter most of our water at camp( yes I am lazy:) but for the Colorado River and something that handles virus removal I was pleased with the purchase. Thanks to the team there at MSR and hopefully see everyone out there on the trails

5 Andrew F.
I appreciate the filter speed and filtration. I think that all the people complaining about their broken filters are ungrateful. I ’ d bet they never went on a 30 mile out and back with 6k vert. The unit is light for what it is. This is an excellent design. They designed a lightweight product that works when perfectly when used correctly. There is a notch between the bottom rubber grip and the frosted main body of the filter. Tighten the grip to the main body until you reach an obvious notch. Then tighten the bottle onto the filter without touching the frosted plastic. It will work flawlessly.

Took the new filter with me on a trek down Kaibab trail in the Grand Canyon. Was able to get clean water from a steady stream down by Phantom Ranch. Nice and cool, clean and crisp is how I would describe it. Then, I used it again half way back up the trail at a location that had rain water collected in big barrels that you could use with a filter and consume. Otherwise, it was not potable. Love my gravity works, can ’ t wait to use it this summer camping.

Very satisfied. Used every day to provide drinking water for a family of five in the Philippines.

If budget is no object- then this is the filter to buy. I also have the Sawyer Gravity system which costs 4x cheaper. Not just a mere filter, it is a also purifier- and the carbon filter is the icing on the cake and makes the filtered water pleasant tasting. Everything about the package is pure premium. MSR did not skimp on the components and it looks and feel as expensive as it actually is. Operating is easy. Long term storage is a bit tedious- it is a 1 hour procedure- but I do n't mind doing to ensure tip top performance and longevity. I know some complain about the flow rate. I never measured- I mean between the claimed 2 mins to reputedly slower 2m30secs in the field.. it is rather irrelevant to me for my use. Which is base camp use where I wont be moving for days. Part of enjoying the outdoors is the being calm about everything and 10L filtered water that comes about a few mins late, is a non- issue for me. And it is really great to produce so much filtered water for camp use effortlessly AND it is supercomforting to know that it is( if the claims are to be believed) the only filter to meet military grade specifications. That seems overkill for me but then why not! Downsides: long term storage and PRICE. This filter is insanely priced.

5 Jonas
It's just a great and reliable system. Even my kids can use it. We are a family of 5 who go camping with friends and we need a lot of water often we use 70 liters on a weekend. With the gravity system we never run out of water and the system does not require attention so it's very good for camping with small kids.

5 Matt
I purchased this filter two years ago for big group and family trips. This year my wife and I took our two kids on an 11- day trip on the Wonderland Trail around Mt. Rainer. The filter performed great, even in dried- up silty/tea- stained lakes. At first, I thought this filter was overkill- many people use squeeze bottle- style filters. Though having to make water for the four of us over 11 days, I was happy I did. Most days, I was filtering around 20 liters of water per day. We filtered into a separate 10l bladder so anyone could quickly fill the cook pot, bottle, or brush teeth. When stowed, the filter, dirty water bag, and extra balder are chunky. However, the weight is negligible once you put this into the group gear pile that gets divvied up between the party. It was consistent with other group gear items in size and weight- rainfly, first- aid kit, stove and fuel, etc. Lastly, the flow rate is brought up on this filter. The filter works great if you hang it high and routinely flush the system. At the end of each season I 've owned this, I `` winterize '' the filter by following the disinfecting directions supplied with the filter. This extra step makes a big difference in the overall performance of the filter.

5 Mark H.
Bought this purifier for a basecamp location with stream water in North Wales mountains. Quickly got an efficient system in place filtering 10 litres every day for next days use. This product, when used as demonstrated on the MSR website is a game changer for our camp, saving time and fuel boiling water for drinking and cooking. Used every day for 5 weeks so far. Just back in civilisation and Wifi for a few weeks so about to sterilise it.

I bought these for a Mexico trip last year. They worked perfectly and no one got sick. So I just bought a few more plus replacement filters for the ones from last year for a trip to South America. Water bottles have a lot of plastic particles that get into the water so this takes care of that and reduces plastic bottle waste.

I use this bottle for hiking and camping. I take it in the bottle sling and have the cup and the firebox nano in the pouch. I do not have any concerns when walking around through the woods away from my base camp. The very best bottle you could ever have and this is my second one. I had the first one for several years and have replaced the filter twice and now it ’s my daughters for her hikes. Wish it wasn ’ t so expensive but you also get what you pay for so I get that. One day I will be able to afford the titanium version and give it a try. Keep up the great work!!

If you hike/camp a lot or even are a survivalist enthusiast you will absolutely love this!

I used this product for travel and loved having it- it's so handy to be able to filter water anywhere on the go and pour it into other vessels or add electrolytes to the bottle. The one tricky thing was getting used to all the different pieces and how they fit together, I had multiple mishaps where the entire bottle spilled or leaked in my bag or on the plane. One I fully understood how all the pieces fit together and was able to make sure that each piece was properly screwed on etc, I did n't seem to have the problem. It does leak when under pressure though, either from electrolytes that fizz or from the pressure on an airplane.

I have n't used it yet, but everything looks great and i 'm looking forward to using it. I got one for backpacking, and my daughter got one for her missions trip.

Peace of mind to be able to get clean water anywhere I go

Love this filter, light weight, simple to use, great tasting and never been sick with the sketchiest of Amazon jungle waters. Have given them to my guy and our daughter. She took hers to Africa with good results.

5 Dustin G.
Alot of floaters after the first couple initial pressings... media from the filter I assume being brand new and all. Have n't really had a chance to use it yet besides that one time, and all the floaters gave me some pause. But I 'll be using it again soon enough and will update my review accordingly if you remind me again.

5 Alfonso L.
It's easy to install and replace. Good service life of 65 gallons( 150 presses). I recommend stocking up on this vital component.

5 Joshua D.
I always value my time out in nature& quick presses allow me to get more done in bushcraft, while staying more hydrated because its just so simple easy& satisfying!

I recently sent off my Miniworks EX Purifier System for repair. It works! My unit came back a few days ago and I gave it a whirl and works like it should have out of the box.. Thanks Cascade Designs for the rebuild.! Good customer service and good turn around time.

[ I bought this filter for remote trips in Alaska. It has performed far above expectations. Water tastes great. Filter is easy to clean and maintain. So much faster than gravity filters, with better tasting product water.

[ This is my second MSR Miniworks water filter. I bought the first one in 2003 and it is still going strong. Once, I had some trouble with it. I reached out to MSR and they rebuilt it at no extra charge to me. Given my great experience with the first one, I bought another when my son and daughter- in- law asked for one to carry on backpacking trips, too.

I purchased my, still go- to, Grayl from kickstarter. Still use original but just bought current version for fly fishing friend that is tired of carrying water in. Thanks for the perfectly engineered back pack water bottle

5 Cheryl L.
The filter works as advertised. It's the work horse of my water purifier and I love it. I opted to get the filter in the orange color as I 'm avoiding black plastic. A water filter in white or light ivory would have a `` cleaner '' look to me and therefore be more desirable. I will be using my water purifier for both travel and long day hikes.

5 Trudi O.
Arriving in the wilderness of the BWCA in Northern Minnesota we realized this was our only water purifier. It worked great and kept 4 of us in clean safe water for several days. It is easy to use and worked well. I plan to bring it on an upcoming trip to Brazil for areas where the water is not safe to drink as well. thank you!

5 Aaron A.
Awesome!!! I used to take 4- 5 16oz water bottles for a day elk hunt. But this year I just carried this and it worked great. Would gladly use this over bottled water anytime!!

5 Rick M.
The titanium is legit and strong, the overall design is cool while being functional and very useful both for travel and making clean water as well as just having a cool bottle to drink out of daily. The bottle seems like it will last. The only problem with the UltraPress is that the cover does not stay connected to the top of the water bottle so there is the potential to lose it- but it does make it easier to drink out of and not in your way when drinking like others that do have the leash. Definitely worth the price as this should be the last water bottle you need to buy for awhile!

[ Aquatabs are great. They are small and light and don ’ t have any moving parts that can break. I keep a few with each of my filters as back up. I also keep some in my camp kitchen box and with my emergency gear for kayaking.

These are great to have. Carry in your purse, car, backpack. Great company, arrived quickly with good communication

[ I bought these for my first back- country camping trip. They worked really well and were super easy to pack and use. Will definitely buy them again if going back- country camping.

Always good to have these on hand when we encounter suspect water sources in the Backcountry. I use them as a back up when trekking with the My scout troop here is AZ.

5 Jarerna
I used these for a backpacking trip across the Teton Crest! I do n't know what they put in these things but they never contaminated the taste of the water and were surprisingly easy to use. We would drop the tablet in and continue hiking a little bit and then it was good to go. Simple and easy. I used one box of these for multiple trips and still have a lot more.

I purchased my miniworks back in 1998 or 1999. Used it with no issues while working for a summer camp for a couple of years. Life took over and have been vehicle camping for years where I could take fresh water along. Fast forward to June 2024. Did a short notice 3 day hike and pulled the filter out of storage. Gave it a test the night before leaving and was having issues.... but, I followed the field maintenance tips and BOOM, worked like a dream. Had no issues during the trip and was very happy with the performance! Will keep this filter as long as possible!! Thanks MSR.

5 Mark J.
I bought this product in 2004 to hike part of the Appalachian Trail. Now older with young kids that want to camp I pull this thing out( always cleaned and dried after previous uses) and it worked flawlessly. No one is sick, water tasted great, and I ’ m glad to see this product still on the market!

5 Kevin (.
Its light, packable, fits wide mouth Nalgene bottles. Worked great for 6 day trip into the interior. No issues just clean water. I recommend this product. FYI purchase and prepare a backup filter just in case.

5 william f.
this is a back up for a unit that I have been using for over 15 years straight to filter all of my water, the original is still going strong but now I have a back up too, its a great product and you can bet your life on it.

5 JobJ
Hi. I 've had this for over 5 years. It has worked amazingly well for me on my extended outdoor adventures. Recently, while cleaning it out I had a bit of an accident- i lost the small plastic ball that's at the top of the filter to prevent the backflow of water.

Used this on a 3 week rafting trip to filter out Colorado River water. Sediment was high and who knows what was in the water. Highly recommended.

5 Cole P
I took this filter on a quick overnight trip and it did exactly what I hoped it would. The soft bottle helped easily filter water quickly. I used it to fill other bottles as we went. Very happy with my purchase.

5 James M
I just about always have one of these in my pack. Fly fishing or trail running this is my water on the go. For backpacking I use a large gravity filter but still like to have this as a back- up for for day hikes. Highly recommended!

5 Jayden P
Must have water filter. Primarily used for self supported mountain runs. Small, lightweight and takes up no room in my pack. Part of my minimum essentials when I set out. Works as described and have never had any filtration issues.

5 john d
This is an excellent addition to my day hiking, backpacking and rock climbing kit. I carry less water when water sources are available. I purchased a 0. 8L one also but the 1. 0L is the one I prefer.
