That said, the rod has great action and the real is very smooth and accurate.... then I hooked a personal best large mouth at 9lbs witch should be within its spec but the rod snapped 23 ” from the tip. I made a decision to purchase this reel because they were on sale. I am a Shimano guy. I bought one and put it on my most abused application. 65 pound braid. On my frog rod. One year later I purchased 2 more due to apparent toughness of the first. Put them on my second and third most used rods. Fast forward two more years, I have replaced all of my Shimano reels. And do n't expect to look back. Cost is 30 to 40 percent lower than the Shimano reels. Thank you for making the choice to keep these reels in an affordable price.

The reel is strong, big crank, the level winder is strong enough for 40# plus stripers and its one less thing to worry about when you are hooked up with a big bass. Plenty of drag and they hold a lot of braid( we use 30 pound Spiderwire). Just make sure you wash them well, they are not saltwater sealed as good as others. Left hand wind is a must for me. I am right handed but never figured out why so many people choose to cast with their right hand and then switch hands so they can wind with their right hand. The size and weight are also just right as I mainly fish for striped bass and blue catfish with this reel perfect on a seven foot medium action rod and 15 lb. test mono. Have had couple of nest when I forgot to put my thumb on the line but after adjusting brake at every sinker change and holding thumb on the line when casting and a few fishing trips everything has been good. The rod on the American hero surpasses the rod on The mach II I have both of these combos, but Ive had to glue the rods tip eye back on twice now with the Mach II it Pulled itself out of the tip of the rod, just by setting the hook on a Small bass, Didn ’ t notice until it felt different when I would cast and the Mach II costs a 100$ ’s more… The two rods are designed completely different in the way the tip is attached The American hero rod being far superior in quality. I wish Lews would Address this matter, it is cheaply done on the Mach II and a bummer. But anyway, if you are on the fence about purchasing the American hero combo jump on off and do it you ’ ll be stoked, my friend Fish on and keep your line tight
