I made a decision to purchase this reel because they were on sale. I am a Shimano guy. I bought one and put it on my most abused application. 65 pound braid. On my frog rod. One year later I purchased 2 more due to apparent toughness of the first. Put them on my second and third most used rods. Fast forward two more years, I have replaced all of my Shimano reels. This reel is simply amazing! Finally got to use it for the first time a few weeks ago, and I was really impressed. Spooled it with 12lb fluorocarbon and tied on a 1/2oz. jig. Once I finally got it dialed in to my settings, everything from hard casts against the wind, to skipping docks, I had no issues with backlash at all. Very impressed with the casting distance I was getting and that DC sound!! It ’s like music to my ears. Definitely a must own. If you 're on the edge of buying this, just go and do it because you wo n't regret it. I now own two.

This reel is great. You need to read the paperwork that comes with it. It explains how it has to be set up in order for it to work as it should. For instance as the guy who posted a 2 star said he had the brake setting at 4 and the tension set to a slow fall. Is not how it should be set up. The directions state tension should be set looser than you would a non dc reel, to allow the dc to work correctly. You also need to use the correct brake setting for the type of line you are using. Granted you can cast without setting it up correctly it the dc wont function right. My honest opinion as someone who is intermediate/ newer to baitcasting( 2yrs) this reel is great for the cost and does what its supposed to do. However if your having issue it's probably user error and you should read the paperwork and try again. Then if you have issues it could be the reel. I 'm going to buy another one or I might buy the metanium dc. I love the sound too

After like two times at the pond I did it backlash in I be casting really far with this and I 'm very glad that I bought this. This is great quality for the great price it is and is very easy to fit in cars because it's two piece which means it can snap in half. So if you want to baitcaster I recommend this one if you 're a beginner.

I have been getting into Bait Caster reels. Bought Shimano, Diawa, and this Lews reel. The Shimano Curado only had 4 brake setting and I could n't get it to cast very far without backlash. The Diawa worked ok. The tention knob was very touchy and hard to access behind the drag. The Lews had a great brake knob that had a good range of tension. Left hand wind is a must for me. I am right handed but never figured out why so many people choose to cast with their right hand and then switch hands so they can wind with their right hand. I got this combo three weeks ago and loved it from day one. Bait casters can be tricky and each can have a learning curve all its own. That said, the rod has great action and the real is very smooth and accurate.... then I hooked a personal best large mouth at 9lbs witch should be within its spec but the rod snapped 23 ” from the tip. I wasn ’ t over extended or pushing the limits. The line held and I painfully hand lined it in. If I had to do it again, I wouldn ’ t change a thing! I WILL perches this combo again.

Great rod and reel. Lew ’s knocked it out the park with this one the quality feel between the overall balance and the smoothness of the reel it certainly doesn ’ t fish like a “ 100 ” dollar combo. I ’ ve been fishing over 30 years now and throwing a bait caster since I was a teenager and I ’ ll tell you this thing is killer all jokes aside. The rod on the American hero surpasses the rod on The mach II I have both of these combos, but Ive had to glue the rods tip eye back on twice now with the Mach II it Pulled itself out of the tip of the rod, just by setting the hook on a Small bass, Didn ’ t notice until it felt different when I would cast and the Mach II costs a 100$ ’s more… The two rods are designed completely different in the way the tip is attached The American hero rod being far superior in quality. I wish Lews would Address this matter, it is cheaply done on the Mach II and a bummer. But anyway, if you are on the fence about purchasing the American hero combo jump on off and do it you ’ ll be stoked, my friend Fish on and keep your line tight
