[ I ’ m in surgical menopause& am constantly trying to strike the right balance between being too hot or too cold. This jacket is absolutely perfect. It ’s lightweight enough to e breathable but at the same time the Omni- tech heating feature kept me warm during a hike. Love that it ’s waterproof as well( walked in rain& I was completely dry). The hood is also great- I can wear a winter hat underneath it& it ’s not too loose. Plus the moonbeam color is my favorite color. 10/10 would recommend.

5 EDC
[ Absolutely love my new coat. It ’s perfect for late Fall/Winter/early Spring days. I especially love the waterproof layer, so I ’ ll stay dry at all times here in Washington state. I definitely have some room for an extra layered sweater and I can ’ t wait to travel with my new coat to London!

5 Tyler
[ Great coat. I ’ m 5 ’ and it ’s the perfect length, not too long but not short. Keeps me warm through Midwest winter 🥶

[ Great jacket. I have put it to the test and it has held up with no leaks. However, it does run a bit larger on size. I highly recommend this jacket!

5
[ Packing for travel, you want a jacket that can handle the cold, wind, and rain yet still fit in your travel bag using minimal space. Marmot solved all that with this jacket. I love my jacket! With both inside& outside pockets and even a hood that actually rides well on your head, everyone should take a look at this jacket before spending your money.

5 Mariz
[ This jacket is everything i payed for! Windproof and waterproof, it is the lightweight champion of all jackets. Easy to pack everywhere with great venting features and overall comfort. Stylistically impecable also! Check me it out!

5 Civil_ian
[ It ’s unnoticeable weight makes it a perfect item to leave in my bag when I commute to work for surprise showers and and a great to keep in a bag for hikes just in case The durability isn ’ t compromised either. After getting to the top of camels hump in northern VT, it started raining shorty after. Parts of this meant we were scrambling down rocks in a down pour. Theres 0 damage to the jacket!

5 thefriedman
[[ Employee of marmot] Bought this jacket for a summer trip full of hiking and urban exploring across Norway. This jacket held up and kept me dry through everything that we encountered-- misty, windy, foggy, rainy-- and it fit great layered over a fleece on the colder days. When the pace picked up or we were going uphill, the pit- zips were great additions to help keep me comfortable and prevent overheating. It also packs down super small so it was easy to bring along on every excursion in a daypack just in case it started to rain.

[ Employee of mountainhardwear] Great easy to wear classic down jacket. Lots of pockets. Runs big for layering, Ill be using it for car camping, etc.

5 nando
This is the jacket of my dreams. MH stuff always fits me great which is nice, but with this fantastic looking and feeling down jacket you also get TWO chest pockets, TWO inside chest mesh pockets, and an adjustable hood strap that makes the hood fit perfecting. great jacket

5 ATLJ
Keeps me warm in the 30s easily with just a normal shirt and a sweater. With real layers I have been able to walk approx 30 minutes round trip in the low 20s and strong winds. It ’s very warm and also gives you that psychological warmth boost of a fat, cozy puffer. The length is just right if you need a big outermost layer but don ’ t want a full parka length. I am normally between S and M for most things and a S easily fits me even with a chunky sweater. The two internal mesh pockets are clutch.

5 J Dawg
Super warm and comfy. Runs just slightly big. I like it that way though. Love mine. Highly recommend

Bought this 2 months ago and I am in LOVE! I ’ m 5 ’ 11 ” and generally between 28- 29 ” waist with a 34 ” inseam and these pants fit and stretch awesome! I ’ m hoping their summer trail pants come in stock with 34 ” inseams soon.

Amazing fit, comfortable, perfect for winter hiking adventures

5 Cate
I bought these pants on a whim and have gotten a ton of use out of them during this chilly Utah winter. I work in sports and often have to look semiprofessional standing on the sidelines in the cold, used them walking the dog, Nordic skiing, and around town! The length is great at 5 10 I ordered the long. The stretch out a little bit after a day of wear but the waist is high enough that have not had any slipping. Highly recommended, I love these pants!!

5 FjällFox
I am so excited to have found these pants, they 're absolutely perfect for winter trekking and hikes. They are very comfortable and allow for a lot of movement while being durable enough to withstand scapes and such through small brush and rocks and branches. They look well tailored and sleek, and are definitely nice enough to stop somewhere and have a nice lunch in them without looking out of place. The brushed interior is warm on its own, and I have also worn them over the Bergtagen Thinwool Long Johns in- 15 with heavy wind gusts without feeling cold. I 'm 172cm and 52kg and ordered a size 36( EU) with long inseam and they are a fantastic fit.

I bought this jacket to wear during a march trip to France where I knew I ’ d need layers to handle the temperature shifts. It was perfect. I ’ m a petite, active woman in my 70 ’ d. I bought a size small and it fit as expected. The hood worked well with and without a hat underneath and I really like the green color.

5 JasFace
[ I bought this jacket because I needed something a little lighter than my full on, white out, blinding blizzard, mid- west 40 below winter coat. It ’s perfect. Long enough to cover below my waist, but not parka length. The hood is great too! The coat is a little fitted but still roomy enough to wear a sweatshirt underneath. So far it ’s been great for cool fall camping nights.

5 ABF10
[ I am usually a small and bought a medium to layer. Perfect. I have large hips and I can zip easily. The arms are a good, long length. This coat breathes so on really cold days, I use it as a mid- layer. I would say it's good on its own above 40 degrees.

5 Morris1986
[ I got this jacket a month ago and was a bit worried because it was so light weight but I quickly found it was soo warm! I love it for everyday and the quality of Fjallraven continues to impress.

5 linbrin92
[ The perfect jacket if you ’ re looking for a lightweight, warm jacket. It is not too bulky and keeps me super warm. I am usually a medium and ended up with a large so that I could have many layers on at once. I originally got an XL because of some of the reviews saying that they ran super small but had to exchange it because that was way too big. I hope this helps!

[ Exactly what I was looking for! I ’ m bigger but short, so I hate how long jackets are on me when I would get bigger sizes. This fixes all of those issues! Since it ’s cropped it rests right at my hips and I have plenty of room to move around in it. It is a little big on my shoulders but I wouldn ’ t size down to a M. It ’s super comfy and warm, and I love the colors.

I 've been wearing this since last winter in Seattle, and it provides excelent protection from cold rain while looking clean and professional.

5 Mike D
I use this as an everyday jacket for plain clothes LE work in PA. It is insanely warm for how light weight it is. Water repellency and wind resistance is excellent. Excellent balance between weight and warmth. Only downfall is the length makes it difficult to get to a sidearm when zipped up.

5 Session H
Impressive 3- 1 after wearing out my North Face 3- 1 system I have wore for years. Bought this to replace it and I am happy with what my research settled upon. Love the zip out silk liner as a stand alone lite duty jacket, a nd the shell works excellent as a rain cover. This is a great system for a beginner or an expert in the field or out on the town. Size runs true and is a little longer than expected but I did not mind the extra length to cover my hind end.

5 Zach F
Such an amazing jacket, i ’ m wearing mine every single day that it ’s raining.

4 Michael R
I 've had my RG foray for a little over 3 years and it's been pretty good to me. I 've mostly worn the puffer by itself in cool weather. There's little wind resistance to it, so be warned. Otherwise it's a good standalone layer on even the coldest days for short exposure times. I 've had to wear the jacket on several rainy days, and the full system during an Easter trip to the UK in' 23. Scotland, Wales, and northern England are n't known for great weather in March and this trip was no exception. We endured near constant wind and periodic rain& sleet. When we went to London it rained for several hours one day and we were in it at its hardest. The fabric shed water well without getting soaked, as I 'd expect from OR. All in all, it's a good buy.

I got this for an upcoming trip to Ireland. I am 5'1 '' and a size 25 waist but I got a size S so I can still wear sweaters underneath. It's so cute and exactly what I was looking for! So far I 've worn it during heavy rain while walking my dog and I stayed completely dry. I like the little flap on the hood so rain does n't get in your face as easily. I like the adjustable waist and hood. I would 've preferred buttons or some other way to secure the front flap as opposed to the velcro but it is n't that big of a deal to me. It feels well made and is warm without making me hot. It does look like a heavier coat because of the insolation but it's pretty light.

5 Mr. L
[ I ordered this coat after my wife saw it in a store and tried it on in person. She loves this coat with all the features it has and especially how warm it is!

5 Christina F.
[ I bought this jacket for my daughter, who says her favorite thing about it is that it keeps her warm. She added, ``... sometimes a little too warm. '' If you tend to be a person who's naturally on the warmer side, know that the Omni- heat* works*!( I have my own jacket with this feature and love it.) The jacket fits well, and the hood closure, drawstring waist, and Velcro at the sleeves that allow for some customization help improve the fit even more.

I purchased this jacket a few weeks ago and brought it with me last week on a 3 day fly fishing trip in western NC. The temperatures at first light on the water were in the mid 30's and this jacket kept my core warm and cozy! I 'm 5 '' 10 160 pounds and the medium was a perfect fit. Plenty of room under the arms and chest area for layering, easily adjustable hood, and plenty of room in the front pockets and the interior pocket too. You also have a adjustable cord around the waist, though I did not need to adjust the fit. The fleece padding found on the interior near your neck, chin and mouth is brilliant! This soft material is fantastic when you need to zip the jacket completely up. This jacket is ethically sourced from 100% recycled polyamide and packs into its pocket or a small back. I 'm very happy with this purchase, well done FjallRaven!

5 Christopher P.
It's so soft and warm and looks great. Just one question. What does it pack into in the video?

5 Grant G.
This is by far the warmest and most comfortable puffy I ’ ve owned. Compared to other brands, this jacket has a higher collar and slightly longer sleeves and back which really seems to help hold the heat. It feels like great quality for a packable puffy. I ’ m 6 ’ 1, 180 lbs and size large fits well layered with a sweater.

5 Jack
I ’ m not sure why anyone gets cold in this jacket. I use this as my outer layer when I ski. All I need underneath is a tshirt and and an old sweatshirt and I ’ m perfect in 0°- 30°F weather. The temperature in Colorado has been hovering around 0°F the last few days, so on short excursions around, I stay plenty warm. Walking around campus this jacket is light and super comfortable. It allows me to not have to layer up much as it takes on the cold itself. It ’s also very durable for a down jacket, I ’ ve clipped trees and crashed hard when skiing, had dogs jump on me, cats claw me, and no damage so far.

5 Finn
This jacket served me well for 10 years of steady use every winter/fall and I finally replaced it. The quality is superb, the new Pertex Shield on the shoulders/arms gives it a much more durable feel. It has a premium feel in the hand and is a nice blend of weight/durability. Fits great with layers underneath, but also works well as a mid- layer under a shell. I 'm a fan of the new color options too. In summary, this is a durable, lightweight, packable and versatile jacket that does its job in the back- country but transitions seamlessly to the front- country. Highly recommended.

5 Arion H
I like the cut of OR jackets. I am 6 ’ 1 ” 235. The Helium Down does not disappoint regarding warmth. It has that soft down feeling with added structural integrity where one might carry a pack. The gusseting in the arm allow for a full range of motion without much rise. I have long arms and can still draw out without the jacket tightening too much in the back. If for some reason I found myself in dire need of more warmth I could wear it underneath a jacket or shell because it could compress enough to almost be a base layer and not sacrifice its loft. At which point I am certain to roast.

5 Travis B
This jacket I has an incredible warmth to weight ratio. The reinforced areas are positioned perfectly for use with backpacks and tactical gear. Very comfortable and warm. Packs up very nicely if you ’ re a backpacker and space conscious.

5 Tesh614
Love that this uses a fairly high fill power down( 800+), making it warm and space/weight efficient. I have higher fill power items like MH ghost whisperer UL( 1000 FP), but most UL garments use fragile fabrics and do n't have any weather protection, so they 're really limited to cold, dry weather. The Helium Down Jacket has weather resistance in key areas due to the Pertex Diamond Fuse panels, which makes it more versatile. It wo n't be a great outer layer if you 're expecting heavy rain, but I wear it by itself in a light mist or under a shell if heavy rain is expected. The Pertex panels are a little crinkly, but not as loud as some reviews suggest. I found the sizing to be accurate. This is quickly becoming a staple of my wardrobe from fall through spring. Thanks OR!

5 Mark C
Have had great experiences with OR gear. Have n't put this to use yet, but zippers and fabric looks like they will hold up through several winters. Contrasting zippers and two shades of blue make this stand out.

I love the 3 in 1 concept. This is a very warm jacket and can be written in multiple ways. Sometimes I wear just the shell or just the liner. I wish I knew what other liners would zip into the shell just for variety.

[ I bought this as a gift for my husband for an upcoming trip. He is 6' and around 190 lbs, and I got him the XL. The sleeves are a bit long but they do have velcro to adjust and tighten them around the wrist. It's roomy but great for layering, though I think if he were ever to pull out the inner layer of the thin down shell, the outer jacket would be huge on him. The length is great for his longer torso, it covers his butt well. He had requested no hood and this one is detachable( not easy to find a decent ski jacket without a hood!) so another win!

5 Kevin Sas
I love this company ’s products. Great quality and this is a return purchase for me.

5 CharlesKing
[ This versatile jacket has many features which are perfect for ski. It is 3- in- 1 so can be adjusted to different temperature with its combination. under arm vent provide extra air flow when needed. GORE- TEX keeps your body warm and dry. They dry quickly. I am absolutely in love with Fjallraven tights, and these are a new favorite.

5 FjällFox
I think Fjällräven really succeeded it balancing the comfortability of tights with the durability required for trekking in forests. These are a perfect combination of the two- flattering and well fitting tights that hold up to the scuffing and scratching that comes with trekking through a natural environment. They still look brand new after several washes and many many treks. The added warmth is such a nice bonus!

[ Great jacket, got it on sale at a awesome price and now it sits in a stuff sack in the car as an emergency jacket or when caught leaving the house without a jacket. ultra compact and easily tossed in a backpack for quick hikes.

5 CJPSU
Got a blue Ghost Whisperer when it was 50% off( when they introduced the new blue color). Last night I decided to really push the temperature range and wore it for a decent walk in 5 Degree(- 15 Wind Chill) temps. I was wearing an undershirt, button down, and the ghost whisperer with hat and scarf and was pretty comfortable the whole time. I 'm glad to know that I can layer this with my winter coat and get down to super low temperatures. Beyond happy with this jacket!

5 Taylor
Excellent quality, looks great, fits true to size, great while cycling/running, not too warm.

5 Mark I.
Warm, feather- light and packable as promised. Two side zipper pockets are large enough for hands and a few stowed items. Very comfortable!

I absolutely love my new jacket! Just to be cleared... I loved the previous Mt Hardwear jacket I had, but the zipper broke& your co. stood behind their product& gave me a very generous credit, when they could n't fix the original zipper. THIS is why I shop with Mt Hardwear!... Excellent quality& standing behind your product( when it failed after 12 years of HEAVY use).

I just got this jacket, but by first impressions of use... WOW! This thing is exactly what I wanted. I have a shell for warmer days but had to bundle too many layers to stay warm on those cold days. I run very hot while skiing, I get to the bottom and need to strip or open all my layers to not overheat. This jacket gives you breathability while carrying the insulation that keeps you warm on the chair up. Literally the only thing that could be improved is the size of the armpit ventilation. Like I mentioned above I run hot so I would have enjoyed more airflow when I open the vents. But that tiny detail is the only thing I can find at fault and it's more of a personal preference. Bravo Mountain Hardwear!

TNF has so many women's jackets that are form- fitting, but I love this one because of how boxy it is. It feels less restrictive and allows more comfort when layering tops underneath. It also looks more stylish, in my opinion!

I received my men's small Ghost Whispered 2 vest today. Weight is 5. 1oz. It's the same fine quality of my Ghost Whisperer 2 sweater that weighs 8. 0 oz. They are roomy enough for layers under and the most packable layers that I own. Kudos to MH for a home run.

[ I bought this a couple of months back to primarily use while playing golf. It is so comfortable that I now use it casually as well. An outstanding vest!

[ It's amazing how light this vest is, and how small it packs down. At the same time, it provides plenty of warmth. Perfect for the Fall, or for travelling when you do n't know what the weather will do and you may need an extra layer.

[ I loooovvvvveeeeeeee this vest. Well made and as warm as good, sweet lovin'! About the only drawback I find with it is the lack of a bacon- warming pouch within its cozy folds!

[ Employee of mountainhardwear] As usual the sizing is spot on with this Mountain Hardware jacket. This is a great lighter down jacket. Many down jackets with smother you with heat no matter how light they are, but this one does not do that. I am going top use this for winter golf as a layering piece. I normally wear a medium and this one I ordered a large so I can put a fleece underneath and still swing a golf club- this one is spot on. find a layer that can work for golf and keep you warm is a rare find. This one is super versatile.

5 JT710
Received this coat as a gift. I have other name brand jackets and this one fits right in as far as quality. It looks and fits great. It has only been one month but so far very happy with this coat.

[ The Coldfront is warmer than expected, much more into the down parka range than the down sweater end of things. The fit is comparable to other OR jackets, maybe just slightly roomier for an extra layer. I am 5 ’ 10 ”, 145 lbs, and the small fits well though the sleeves could use an extra 1/2 ” or so

[ Bought on black friday and is the warmest jacket that I own. The down feels full and dense, and cold dry days are no longer an issue, I 'm very careful to keep it away from the rain. Fit was accurate, perfect for myself.

5 Greg
I love this jacket. I looks great and has more room than the typical OR jacket. I am 6 ft and ordered the large and I have room for some layers under the coat which was not typical of my other OR jackets.

5 shep
Great jacket and hoodie. Inside pockets are good for gloves. Hoodie has room for a beanie, but does n't snug down. I live and work in Front Range Colorado, this fits the bill from Nov- Apr

5 Vivek
It is quite warm does a great job; I generally wear a L but went for the Medium here based on the recommendation that this would be slightly bigger than a regular sized one and I did n't plan on having multiple layers under it. If layering under it, then go for the regular size. It is heavier than my L Arcteryx Cerium LT, which will be my go to for packing and traveling. But overall, very pleased with what this does.

I love Polartec Powerstretch for a wide range of activities, and have used it for over 20 years in pieces from most of the major outdoor manufacturers. MH's design is the best I 've found, and I hope they do n't change and will continue to offer this piece indefinitely, just in more colors. I really appreciate having the elastic hem to seal in warmth, and make it easy to layer under other layers. The elastic cuffs with simple but effective thumb loop is great too. Also love the raglan shoulder design. Seriously MH do n't ever change a thing with this piece, it's perfect as is!

Frequently Asked Questions For Hiking Outfit Cold Weather

When selecting a cold weather hiking outfit, focus on layering to maintain warmth and flexibility. Look for moisture-wicking base layers to keep sweat away from your skin, insulating mid-layers for added warmth, and waterproof or windproof outer layers to protect against the elements. Additionally, consider accessories like hats, gloves, and thermal socks to ensure comfort during your hike. Proper fit and breathability are also important to enhance your overall experience in colder conditions.

When choosing layers for hiking in cold weather, start with a moisture-wicking base layer to keep sweat away from your skin. Next, add an insulating layer, such as fleece or down, to retain body heat. Finally, select an outer layer that is windproof and waterproof to protect against the elements. It's important to ensure that each layer is breathable to help regulate your temperature during physical activity.

When selecting clothing for cold weather hiking, look for materials that provide insulation, moisture-wicking properties, and breathability. Synthetic fabrics, such as polyester and nylon, are often used for their lightweight and quick-drying characteristics. Natural fibers like wool can offer excellent warmth and moisture management. Additionally, insulated materials, such as down or synthetic fills, can help retain body heat while keeping you comfortable during your outdoor adventures.

When selecting cold weather hiking gear, it's important to consider insulation, moisture-wicking properties, and wind resistance. Look for materials that provide warmth without adding excessive bulk, as well as features like adjustable hoods and cuffs to help retain heat. Additionally, consider layering options that allow for flexibility in changing temperatures and conditions. Breathability is also key to ensure comfort during physical activity.

To ensure your hiking outfit is both warm and breathable in cold weather, focus on layering with materials that provide insulation while allowing moisture to escape. Start with a moisture-wicking base layer to keep sweat away from your skin, followed by an insulating mid-layer that traps heat. Finally, choose an outer layer that is windproof and water-resistant to protect against the elements while still allowing for ventilation. This combination will help maintain comfort during your hike.

For cold weather hiking, effective insulation types include down and synthetic materials. Down insulation is known for its lightweight warmth and compressibility, making it ideal for layering. Synthetic insulation, on the other hand, retains warmth even when wet and is often more affordable. Both types can provide the necessary warmth and comfort for outdoor adventures in chilly conditions.

When selecting cold weather hiking apparel, consider both the fit and the layering system. Look for a snug fit that allows for movement without being too tight, as this will help retain body heat while providing comfort during activity. Ensure that the clothing accommodates base layers and mid-layers, allowing for easy adjustments based on temperature changes. Additionally, check for features like adjustable cuffs and hems to seal in warmth and prevent cold air from entering.

When dressing in layers for cold weather hikes, it's important to start with a moisture-wicking base layer that helps keep sweat away from your skin. Next, add an insulating layer to retain body heat, such as fleece or down materials, which provide warmth without adding too much bulk. Finally, top it off with a waterproof and windproof outer layer to protect against the elements. Remember to adjust your layers as needed to maintain comfort and prevent overheating during your hike.

To protect yourself from wind and moisture while hiking in cold weather, consider layering your clothing with a focus on windproof and waterproof materials. Start with a moisture-wicking base layer to keep sweat away from your skin, followed by an insulating layer for warmth. Finally, choose an outer layer that is both wind-resistant and waterproof to shield you from the elements. Accessories like hats, gloves, and gaiters can also help keep you warm and dry during your hike.

Insulated hiking jackets are designed to provide warmth by trapping body heat, making them ideal for cold weather conditions. They typically feature materials like down or synthetic insulation, which offer varying levels of thermal efficiency. Non-insulated jackets, on the other hand, are often lighter and more breathable, making them suitable for layering or for use in milder temperatures. Choosing between the two depends on the specific weather conditions and the level of activity planned during your hike.
