The only things I had to do is break the reel down and re - oil it and change the line on the reel but I always re - oil my reels before using for the 1st time. Great reels. I have 2 and am shopping for another. Wo n't buy it here because they do not have the higher gear ratio in the left hand retrieve model. Only 4 stars because it comes with combat grips instead of Winn knobs. But, I have swapped the combat grips for Winn round knobs. I even contacted Lew's and was able to get black and gold end caps for the knobs. I have one on a TP1 Black and the other on a Custom Lite. The reels cast great, the retrieve is smooth, and they are strong. And, they look good too. Get one today.

This a solid reel that should last forever! The drag on this reel is very smooth, and I can hear the drag over loud wind and surf. The line spool has no wobble with the sturdy bearings holding it. The frame is ridged, not like a cheaper composite frame and the bail operates with a positive snap when closing. This is the second one of these reels I ’ ve purchased, and I was able to haul in a huge sting ray with no drag issues. This is a reel that will last me forever!

I purchased the 30 for my daughter about a month ago to go with her Stratus rod. She wanted pink braid but we could only find 15lb line so we spooled it up and threw a topwater on it and tested it out. To both of our amazement, she casted a good 35 yards on her first cast which is about double of what she was capable of with her old reel using the same rod and line brand. We switched rods keeping the same line and again, 30 - 35 yards easy. I know there are a few factors when casting, but the only change made was the reel. This led me to believe that this reel made a huge difference for her. This is probably one of the best purchases for fishing equipment by far. Not to mention, the employee in the fishing section at the Summerville, SC location recommended it. Smooth casting, lightweight, very sleek, definitely recommend picking one up.

I 've owned a variety of Zebco rods and reels over the last 25 years. This is my first Gold model 33. The castability is what I expect from a 33 reel but the added bearings are what sets the Gold model apart. Too shallow bottom of carriage I bought it to hinin an old rod but it doesn ’ t fit because the old screw in holder rubs the reel carriage button. 1 more millimeter and it would be golden. I have several larger baitfeeder spinning reels for surf fishing, including a Penn Fierce III 6500 and an Okuma Avenger 8000 series. I was looking for something smaller/lighter but still tough enough for medium duty saltwater.
