Purchased this for use camping. Used primarily to split cut wood into kindling sticks for camp fire. It was solid, lightweight and held its edge beautifully. For such a small and very inexpensive hand axe it proved itself to be a great tool. With a sturdy canvas cover for the axe head and proper care I do n't see why this product will need to be replaced for years. Coghlan's Pack Axe is a terrific addition to my camping equipment and would recommend it for a variety of uses.

[ I bought this axe because of its ability to self arrest on ease and it works flawlessly It ’s pick construction makes grabbing the ice easy and as a beginner I wanted the reassurance that I got an axe that can save my life

Corriveauchris1211
[ I purchased this axe for a mountaineering school on Rainer. This ice axe is great for general mountaineering but also versatile enough for complex or steep routes. I like the rubberized grip and curved shaft which elevate it from the design of a standard ice axe. These features really assist on steep snow climbing. Additionally, the teardrop design of the shaft make it more comfortable in the mid- dagger position. Finally, the weight is still relatively low despite its solid design.

I bought this hand axe last month and used it to cut up some roots and stumps. It's actually made by Fiskars which is a brand I have had excellent experience with. It feels balanced with a lightweight handle. Edge is sharp with a nice bevel. Well made tool.

I have used this on several camping trips and a search and rescue mission. For the size, this hatchet can do quite a bit of work. I found it best for splitting logs under 8 inches in diameter, but you can go bigger if you commit yourself to a good swing more outside cuts. It does a fine job cutting deadfall thanks to the grip( lanyard still recommended for long periods of use). It may not be a `` bushcrafting '' tool, but I found that it cuts feather sticks pretty well for an ax and easily cuts grooves into logs for easier catching at the campfire. The edge retention has been very good and I have not had to do any serious resharpening after work. The only little chip in the blade came from when I hit the dirt.

Well made, light, yet strong. It does n't appear super heavy duty but that was n't what it designed for and not the use I have it for. A good product from Black Diamond.

Perfect for mixed glacier/climbing routes with minimal technical terrain but you can do some scrambles as needed. Wish it came with a leash or trigger for more secure handling but otherwise a solid choice for the money.
5
Shelby Z.
I was shocked at how light the axe felt. Durable and functional. Eases the mind on steeper slopes with its ability to dig in.
5
Emily J.
The angle in the head is nice for steeper terrain. Only comment is that the cutout in the adze makes it less effective for digging, but that can be remedied with a piece of duct tape covering the cutout.

Packs with llamas
This is an excellent all around size for most uses. Small enough for camp chores but still decent sized to get some light felling done. Certainly not an ultralight item but well worth the weight. This came hair shaving sharp with a mirror finish. Handle grain structure was tight but orientation wasn ’ t quite what I like it to be, but reasonable for a mass produced axe. Overall you just can ’ t beat this axe.

[ Comfortable functional wood handle, very sharp right out of the box and a nice leather sheath. I got it mostly for having around at camp, it's definitely got better uses than that but it is excellent.

[ I ’ ve used cheaper axes for years and decided to get one that would be used for several lifetimes. I imagine this one will be used by my kids. They are made by people that take pride in their axes in a manner refined over centuries. Important to me is the lightweight design that can travel well in a canoe or pack. It came felling sharp out of the box.

[ I bought the Hults Bruk Almike last month for a lightweight, light duty hatchet that would fit in my pack and this one fits all of these needs. Cuts great. It is super sharp, so watch yourself! I like the cover. No snaps!
5
Freed
[ Super sharp out of the box and feels real nice in hand and in swing. Haven ’ t used it in the field proper yet, but did find a few things to chop and whittle in the back yard, preformed well. As you may already know Hults Bruk reputation at this point precedes itself, so feel confident about the investment. Came with some lame government warning printed on, I lightly scraped that thing off, I don ’ t need no stinking warning on my hatchet!
4
Al Phil
[ I bought this as a sample of what Hults Bruk can do in order to compare to my Gransfor Bruk small forest axe. Obviously this one is smaller, but Hults Bruk axes seem to be more readily available in the States. Quality is comparable and prices between similar models seem to be lower on average than GB axes. Unfortunately, I 've yet to use this hatchet, but so far I 'd give it a strong recommend to anyone interested in a high quality axe. A few additional notes: fit and finish are great. Good fit between the head and handle; no serious or worrisome gaps. The handle is smooth and has a comfortable shape. Edge comes sharp and is fairly even on both sides. Exactly what I 'd expect from something in this price range.

I picked one of these up in 2012 to use as a backpacking hatchet and over 12 years later, it ’s never left my pack. It was one of my first pieces of gear and is officially my oldest piece of gear that I regularly use. Plus, if you get bored at the campsite, you can throw it at a log. It is a tomahawk after all.

I bought this as a Christmas gift for our grandson who is away at college. I like the weight of the Hawk and the way the blade is made. A sleek, extremely fast tool or weapon. The FastHawk is terrific! Thus the 5 stars.

This is a solid piece of equipment for a reasonable price. Obviously this is made for tactical use, but this would be great camping or hiking too. It ’s light and easy to carry with the provided sheath.
5
Patton
I ’ ve chopped, pried, hammered, dug, thrown, and demolished with this thing. Goes on my hunting pack, backcountry fly fishing pack, kayaking pack and the rest of the time lives under the seat of my truck. Zero corrosion and it gets wet often. I added a paracord wrap on the handle and other than sharpening it requires zero maintenance. 100% satisfied and unlike my RMJ or other high end hawks I don ’ t mind abusing it. The bang for your buck on this hawk is off the charts. I give them to friends as gifts for$ 50 they get a tool that will last many years. I ’ m not thrilled that I ’ m this is made overseas but quality is top notch and this would be triple the price if it was made in the USA.

Chang
[ Went back and forth with Quark and Nomic several times. Now I finally decided that I like the Quark better than the Nomic on pure ice. I lead WI4. But even when I follow WI5, I also prefer the Quarks. Some minor annoyances. The new thing that allows the pinky rest to fold is nice for plunging, but sometimes on route, if you bang it against ice, it may accidentally fold, and you lose the pinky rest.... I do n't really like the index finger rest, and there's no good way to get rid of it.
5
SWinS
[ Needed a second quark to replace a hybrid tool/axe that was n't working for me on water ice. The quark is a good all- rounder for ice and snow. Does n't plunge as well as a regular axe, does n't handle the steep stuff as well as a more aggressive tool. But I 'm not the type to get specialized gear for every situation, so this suits me fine.
