I am obsessed with the Bessie Packable Jacket. It ’s everything I didn ’ t know I needed — lightweight, incredibly warm for how thin it is, and so easy to travel with. I love how it packs into itself and even turns into a pillow( seriously genius for flights or road trips). I have been waiting for a hooded version of a packable puffer that was still cute, and after enjoying other Halfdays products for skiing, I was excited when I saw this in their spring collection this year. This jacket arrived several weeks ago and has been great for everything I 've thrown at it! It has kept me warm, dry, and cute on rainy commutes to work, mulching my garden, and taking my dog on a field trip to our local forest preserves. It has been comfortable in temps as low as 35 and as high as 65 or so for me, personally. I recently completed a 3- week vacation trip to 3 different countries( flights between each+ some train travel) using this pack. I needed clothing for weather ranging from cool( in the low 50's F) and rainy to hot and humid, and activities ranging from standard city sight- seeing to more formal dinners to hiking some rugged trails. I wanted to be able to carry- on to avoid lost luggage. I also took with me a lightweight stuff- sack style day pack( from another brand) to use as my `` personal item '' on flights and to use during daytime outings at my destinations, since the Alpa 42L is too big to use as a daypack. I like the Alpa 42L because of the clamshell design and interior organization. The pack is spacious, well organized, comfortable to wear, rugged, and has thoughtful details that other reviewers have already mentioned. I like the fact that the external laptop pocket is padded and somewhat hidden, and can be used for other flat- ish items if you 're not putting a laptop in it. I always carry with me a wide- mouth Nalgene water bottle, and the stretch water bottle pocket fits it well, unlike similar packs from other brands. I recommend using compression bags for clothes inside the Alpa( I used packing cubes, but wished I had used ones with compression). The pack had more than enough room for my clothes for the 3- week trip- in fact I had too many clothes( but also had access to washing machines during this trip). For reference, across the Alpa 42L and my day pack, I took 2 pairs of jeans, 2 pairs of linen pants, a pair of lightweight shorts, a pair of athletic tights, a wool sweater, a backpacking rain coat, a cotton jacket, 5 t- shirts, 4 collared shirts, a linen dress, underwear, socks, and a bathing suit, toiletries, 3 books, a laptop and electronics cords/chargers/batteries, a couple of notebooks, gifts, a pair of sandals( wore my trail shoes on the plane), and I still had more room in the Alpa( although to meet certain flight size and weight restrictions I had to redistribute things between the Alpa and my day pack). My improvement suggestions: 1. Although I love the clean lines and exterior of the Alpa, I would add small side straps for cinching down the bag when it's not full. This would help it better fit some of the European airline size restrictions for carry- ons. Side straps would also be nice for holding trekking poles or a wet raincoat etc. while wearing the pack. 2. Position the sewn- on exterior webbing in the corners in a way that it's easier to add after- market elastic cords for strapping things like a rain coat to the exterior of the bag( or Cotopaxi could offer an add- on elastic strap specifically designed for the Alpa, but that could be removed for flights). I bought some elastic cord for a DIY attempt, but the angles and spacing of the webbing made it hard to create a `` net '' effect on the exterior of the pack and I scrapped that idea.

I took this bag on a 16 day trip, the only thing I added was one extra compression style cube for underwear and socks. Great high quality zippers and compartments I find the handles to cary as a duffle extremely useful and the luggage pass through strap is also useful for passing through other items. I used the luggage pass through strap to hold a travel guitar at some points. I checked the bag several times on international flights and it was durable and protected my gear.

I used this for a 2 week trip to italy( with lots of outfit changes) and a 3 week trip in colombia. I was able to fit all of my clothes using packing cubes and love that it unzips like a suitcase. I have gotten so many of my friends to buy this after they see how easy it is to travel with. My trips were in warm weather, so I am not sure how much it would hold for heavier clothes. It also does get heavy if you have to walk with it on your back for multiple miles. I love traveling with this bag!

Used this for three weeks in Colombia. Never any issues traveling. We were on everything from tuk- tuks to very small airplanes, and there is always room for this pack. Very durable and water resistant. I wish there was a small pocket on the outside for a water bottle, but that does n't take much away from this pack. [ Bought this for a trip, needing something large for a longer stay( a few months). I thought I might pack a larger one enough to be over weight. Nope. This one is nice- the material is a good heavy fabric, and shows some stains when tossed around by luggage handlers, but no tears or other damage. The frame and wheels are solid- they roll really nicely. The handle is fairly sturdy- no extra play where there should not be any. The button is no longer there to release the handle, it ’s a bowed piece of plastic, so squeezing it to deploy the handle is a little more difficult. It ’s nice that it won ’ t come open unintentionally, but it may be a bit difficult to deploy the handle if you have grip issues( arthritis, as an example). Reviews that mention it can tip over if packed with heavy stuff near the top are correct- make sure to pack heavier things near the wheels. Internal organization is good- the two long side pockets and a few zippered pouches in the cover. There is not a separate organization pocket like on the backpack only version, which is fine. Carrying like a backpack is decent enough for me- but it ’s really a rolling bag first, with the option for the straps. The little hidden strap to lash another bag to this one is a nice feature, or, use the handle since it extends far enough on the 60L to go through straps on another bag. The main zipper is a nice large YKK type, which I prefer to the smaller one that is on the 46L backpack version. Can stuff it full, and lash things down with the straps, or use the straps on the outside to temporarily lash something to the bag when wheeling it around. I like that the padded sides have enough protection without being a hard bag that might crack or split- definitely protects things inside the bag. Easy to spot on a luggage carousel, everyone seems to like those hard bags, so it stands out. There is no dedicated laptop sleeve area, or a second outside pocket on the lid( like the 46L non wheeled sojourn would have, as an example). Carry a padded sleeve and put it inside when you want to carry the bag around, or use a second bag for that. Overall- if you want a good roller bag that is a little smaller than the max checked luggage size, and need something a little larger than a carry on- this one is a solid choice.
