The only things I had to do is break the reel down and re- oil it and change the line on the reel but I always re- oil my reels before using for the 1st time. Great reels. I have 2 and am shopping for another. Wo n't buy it here because they do not have the higher gear ratio in the left hand retrieve model. Only 4 stars because it comes with combat grips instead of Winn knobs. But, I have swapped the combat grips for Winn round knobs. I even contacted Lew's and was able to get black and gold end caps for the knobs. I have one on a TP1 Black and the other on a Custom Lite. The reels cast great, the retrieve is smooth, and they are strong. And, they look good too. Get one today.

I bought this reel about 2 months ago and so far, it's done great! I bought this reel for saltwater use and it has held up fine. I 've caught everything from edge of slot puppy drum off the beach to small specks and striper in the sound. I can happily report that thus far, I have had no problems with the unsealed drag. As far as the drag's performance, it could n't work better. the drag knob is easy to adjust while playing a fish and has a nice clicky- ness to it so you do n't over adjust it. I did get a little sand in there while fishing from the beach, but after removing the spool and giving it a thorough rinse it works like new. My few complaints are rather petty. The first being that the finish seems to come off fairly easily. while having it in the canoe with me it was sliding around and the matte black finish rubbed off a bit around the rim. however, it's hardly noticeable and only cosmetic. Secondly, the rubbery handle occasionally catches the fly line when I 'm casting. It juts out a bit more than I care for.

Casting it was smooth and the only backlashes I experienced was just due to inexperience. After I dialed everything in, I used my thumb to cast and did n't experience any backlash. Left hand wind is a must for me. I am right handed but never figured out why so many people choose to cast with their right hand and then switch hands so they can wind with their right hand. The size and weight are also just right as I mainly fish for striped bass and blue catfish with this reel perfect on a seven foot medium action rod and 15 lb. test mono. Used to have the last model of 10k Saragosa SW. Was too big to cast or hold all day, so sold it and recently bought the 6k Saragosa SW A. Love it. Smooth and light and casts well. That said the 6k has limited line capacity. Fishing for pelagic species off the kayak in SE Florida the 8k or 10k makes more sense so may buy one for next trip down. Hard to find at local stores so online seems like the only way to get one.

Purchased this reel a few weeks ago and finally got to use it today. pulled in a 8 pound 26 inch channel catfish with ease. The clicker is awesome, i was standing 20- 30 feet away and herd it over the noise from the rapids. I do n't know why anyone would give this reel a bad review other then the fact that they do n't know how to use a bait caster. I used the 15# line that came with it and a 3/4 ounce sinker, it cast great.
