I am typically a size 9M in all my Hokas but had to order a 9. 5M in this style as it ran a bit short. I broke my ankle over 18 months ago and I live in all my Hokas. They got me thru some tough times. Love them all!

Loved the previous versions of the Speedgoat, but the 6 felt “ off ” to me, and had durability issues so I switched over to a different brand. Luckily the Speedgoat 7 fixes many of my previous complaints and is a light, cushioned trail shoe that still provides a good ground feel. I have long, square shaped feet and the toe box felt slightly narrow; sizing up made the whole shoe too big, so I stuck with my traditional size and did a heel lock lace tie which helped keep the foot in place!

Cascadia did very well in a steady all day rain. Great shoe.

[ I ’ ve been running in the Men ’s Cascadia 19 GTX for a few weeks now, and I ’ m genuinely impressed. The Gore- Tex lining keeps my feet completely dry even on muddy trails and during rainy runs, while still allowing breathability. The updated midsole feels more responsive and cushioned compared to earlier versions, offering great comfort on uneven terrain. Traction is solid, and the lugs grip well without feeling bulky. I also appreciate the secure fit — it hugs the foot nicely without being too tight. Overall, it ’s become my go- to trail shoe for wet and unpredictable conditions.
5
Siva
[ The Cascadia 19 GTX is an exceptional hiking shoe that delivers outstanding support and comfort — perfectly suited for Portland ’s summer trails. Portland in July offers warm, dry, and sunny conditions, and only occasional rainfall. These conditions make it an ideal time for hiking in local hiking trails like in areas like Forest Park, the Columbia River Gorge, or Mount Tabor. But even with mostly dry weather, sudden changes can occur in our area, and that ’s where the Cascadia 19 GTX shines. The shoe features an innovative Trail Adapt system, built for durability and stability. Its rugged outsole rubber provides excellent traction, whether you 're trekking on dry gravel or navigating a surprise summer shower. The integrated flexible rock plate adds a protective layer in the sole, enhancing stability on uneven terrain — something I truly value after past slips on wet trails. The GORE- TEX upper, bonded seamlessly with the shoe, makes it both breathable and waterproof — a must- have for Portland ’s unpredictable microclimates. Brooks ’ signature DNA Loft v3 cushioning — a blend of foam, rubber, and air — offers plush comfort and responsive support, especially in the midsole. It ’s noticeably soft and supportive, making long hikes feel effortless. Despite its rugged build, the Cascadia 19 GTX is lightweight and flexible, making it a joy to wear on both urban trails and backcountry adventures. Having said all the good things about the shoe If am going to nitpick the only thing is that I am not a fan of the color scheme of my pair. It was more appealing in the picture than in person. In summary, this shoe is a reliable companion for Portland ’s summer hikes. It handles both dry and damp conditions with ease, offers excellent traction, and keeps your feet comfortable and protected all day long.

[ I absolutely love these shoes. Brooks is always my go to brand for comfort and I ’ ve always wanted an option for when I ’ m out hiking or running in the rain. These shoes fit the bill to a tee. They are true to size and like most Brooks are super comfy. I love that they are waterproof so I can feel comfortable wearing them out in the rain and I love the look and design. I wouldn ’ t wear these casually as the waterproof aspect does prevent some ventilation from getting in, but I ’ d defo keep these in my rotation for rainy days, trail hikes, or camping adventures. Overall a great pair of shoes.

Jamie
[ I ’ ve been really impressed with the Brooks Cascadia 19 GTX. Right out of the box, I loved the style — sleek enough to wear out running errands, yet rugged enough for my training runs. The design strikes that rare balance between function and everyday wearability. From a performance standpoint, these shoes delivered exactly what I needed. I used them on both pavement and dirt trails, and they felt equally supportive across surfaces. The cushioning is excellent — enough to absorb impact on longer runs without feeling bulky — and I noticed the difference in how much better my knees felt afterward. The upper fabric feels high- quality and durable, with just the right amount of structure to keep my feet supported, even on uneven terrain. The GTX version also held up well in wet conditions, keeping my feet dry without overheating. Overall, the Cascadia 19 GTX is a well- designed, versatile shoe that supports my training needs and looks great while doing it. Highly recommend for anyone looking for a trail shoe that performs well and doesn ’ t compromise on comfort or style.

Recently disposed of SpeedGoat 5 after nearly two years of exercise and daily wear. SG7 seems to have the same strengths and less weaknesses as its predecessor. Loved the former for traction, comfort and durability. The latter is lighter and slightly more streamlined and nimble. After 10+ walk- jogs, I can tell that these are worth every penny I paid. Should probably be hunting another pair in my rare size

Upper: The upper is supportive, and although it's not completely waterproof, the rubberized toe areas provide some protection from the elements in high wear

Trevor
[ Not only is this a high performing shoe, but it also looks fantastic! The colors are perfect. The material is the high quality expected from Brooks. The first thing I noticed was how incredibly lightweight this shoe was, especially for a trail shoe. The fit was almost perfect. It was a little tight around the mid foot at first but it felt much better as I progressed through the first run. The lug depth handles wet and muddy trails with ease. My favorite part of this shoe was the cushioning. I have always worn softer shoes and the Catamount 3 is the best I ’ ve ever worn. They have a smooth ride with a considerable amount of energy return which leaves my legs feeling great after every run. These shoes will definitely be a staple for me moving forward!
5
MattL
[ The Catamount 3 are hands down the best pair of running shoes I 've ever owned. From the instant I took them out of the box, I could tell how well designed they were. These shoes are incredibly light- I genuinely felt a boost in my running speed compared to other pairs. The sizing is spot- on in both length and width and the sleek design adds a stylish touch. These shoes also have deep treads which makes them perfect for training in all types of conditions. I 've used them for both short 3- mile runs on city streets as well as for general cross- training in the gym. They were perfect for both scenarios and have become my go to training shoes. The only drawback is that they are not water resistant. I had stepped in a shallow puddle and despite my foot not being fully submerged, water still seeped in. That said, they also performed well on the slippery roads due to their deep treads. So just watch your step!

[ The Catamount 3 is my new go to shoes. I started training for trail running last fall. The weather changed a lot and its very cold, icy and there is snow everywhere. Not a great time to train outdoors but these shoes are also perfect for indoor cross- training. I love these shoes for various reasons:- they are light and with just enough cushioning to feel comfortable and stable- responsive- have a good grip on terrain, both uphill and downhill which is great to get some speed- are very comfortable. I did not get any soreness after the first use- esthetics are nice. They are edgy, modern and unique.- fabric and materials used are of very high quality, as expected Downside: I started picking these shoes everytime. I highly recommend. They seem like they will last for a long time. P. S. I get asked often what brand and model they are while training.

[ I was somewhat skeptical of the color at first, but this shoe has definitely set a new standard for me! They feel great on my feet. They support your feet snugly while remaining ultra comfortable! The textured laces keep the shoes snug. I ’ ve been wearing this shoe for every day activities as well. A great shoe at the gym as well as a day spent walking around the mall. These shoes have kept my feet comfortable during a 9 hour shift at work, and then coming home and chasing two young children around the house.

I don ’ t run trails a lot but I like having light and comfortable shoes for hikes. These are an excellent choice, the foam offers plenty of protection in rocky terrain but its not so high that you feel unstable. Very first hike with these, I came across snow and mud and am pretty happy with how it held up, great traction and no wet feet. Will probably get a customized version when that ’s available or stock up on alternate colorways.

[ The Nike ACG Pegasus Trail is a super comfortable shoe ready for any trail. The shoe is very grippy and does well in many different types of terrain, even the rockier ones. The upper material forms to the foot great and is very breathable. The midsole material feels very comfortable and the shoe overall feels very stable. The wider toebox allows for a more comfortable fit and is great for more technical trails! Overall, this is an incredibly comfortable and capable trail shoe for short or long trails!

For the North American market the UG4 is a quantum leap forward from the previously released UG2. Relieve Sphere and optiFOAM specifically are new components that take an already established UG line up a full level to being a serious competitor. Visually UG4 looks overconstructed, there is a lot going on, but it is remarkably lighter in hand and underfoot than I anticipated. Weighing in at 10oz UG4 hits all of the desirables: durability, stability, responsive, confidence- inspiring, and balanced. This shoe checks all the boxes and passes the all- seasons checklist for running in the Cascades. Another homerun from Salomon!

[ I have 3 runs under my belt so far and I really enjoy the comfort of the shoe while on the trails. I usually run in Ghost series on the road, so this felt natural. The grip on the shoe gives me great traction, sometimes almost too much as I have unfortunately not gotten used to lifting my foot as much as needed for trails. I would highly recommend for light trails. I have n't taken on a more technical `` mountain hike/run '' yet but I think it would hold up well. They are n't waterproof, so I would n't go running through the creek, but they seemed to do well on wet leaves.

[ I recently tried the Catamount 4 Tail Shoe. I run mainly on gravel/dirt roads and paths so a trail shoe is a must! These felt a little tight in the uppers for the 1st couple of runs then I fell in love with them and they have been my go to ever since! I usually purchase a size 10 1/2 to an 11 in women ’s and I do prefer a tighter fit. A men ’s 8 1/2 have worked well for me. I have an average width foot and the toe box fit is great. I ’ m 30+ miles in and these have kept me sure footed and the cushion has kept me from any stone bruises! I look forward to many more miles in these! The colors have just been a fun bonus, as the darker teal hasn ’ t gotten dirty looking.

BrooksRunningShoes
[ I had not worn Brooks running shoes before so this was my introduction. I 've been a runner for over 40 years and ran many races- 5K, 10K, 10 Miler, 1/2, and Full Marathons. Now I 'm out there to only compete with myself. These shoes felt really good right away! Lots of cushioning( which I like) and support. I do n't choose running shoes based on how they look but these are nice- looking shoes. It took me a run or two to get used to the difference between my other shoes but now they feel so comfortable. My time has improved a bit also. I need a wide- toe box and these were perfect. I have only run in them in cold weather so I 'm not sure about how they function in the heat. I also only ran on paved roads. PROS: Good support, Plenty of room in the toe box, Plenty of cushioning, lighter than expected, Very comfortable CONS: The tongue is flimsy so you have to hold onto it to put the shoe on. That would not be a deal- breaker for me though.
5
Jonb
[ After running several miles I can say these are amongst my favorite shoes for trail running. The soles are thick with good cushion with each step. The laces secure tight to my foot with zero sliding around. I have one other pair I currently run in and plan on using these in my rotation going forward. I ’ m also a huge fan of the aesthetic, in fact they ’ re probably my favorite running shoe in terms of appearance and colorway. If I was to purchase another pair, however, I would order a half size up as the toe box is slightly more narrow and my big toe rubs slightly. One major thing to know is there is not a lot of arch support which would make them less ideal if you have a flatter foot. The shoes work well for me and I ’ d happily purchase them again when it ’s time for a new pair.
5
Jarrett
[ I typically wear a size 10 or 10. 5 depending on the brand. The size 10 Catamount 4, fit snuggly and kept my heel locked in place, while still allowing for plenty of wiggle room in the toes. Took these out of the box and went on a quick 8 mile run the first day( paved road) and another 7 miles the following day( paved& some loose gravel). The shoes feel lighter on my feet than I expected, very responsive, and provide a ton of cushioning for the heel. The fabric is lightweight& breathable, which kept my feet from overheating towards the end of runs. It ’s been very dry and warm lately; so, I wasn ’ t able to test how they hold up in inclement weather. The traction is great on loose gravel and paved roads alike. I ’ m a big fan of the color scheme though I know bright colors aren ’ t for everyone. My only complaint is the tongue feels a bit thin and has a tendency to get bunched up when you are putting on the shoes. This isn ’ t a sticking point in the slightest because if you hold onto the tongue while sliding feet into shoes, it ’s no longer a problem. Overall I ’ m extremely satisfied with these shoes and quickly becoming my new go- to.

[ The Brooks Catamount 4 are some of the most comfortable running shoes I ’ ve worn. The fabric is sturdy yet breathable and while I do wish they were available in more color options the current design is quite sleek. I was shocked when I first put them on by how light they felt on my feet. I ’ ve run in them multiple times now and am pleased to share that my knees and back do not ache after a long run when I wear these shoes. They provide wonderful support and protection, making running more enjoyable and allowing me to train harder.

I ’ ve been running long trail miles in these shoes and I absolutely love them. From the very first run, the comfort stood out — the cushioning feels plush underfoot without being overly soft or unstable, which makes these great for long days out on the trail. They don ’ t feel bulky or heavy. The fit feels true to size and secure, and the outsole handles varied terrain with confidence thanks to the Contagrip lugs — I ’ ve been able to run everything from smooth dirt roads to rocky singletrack without any major slip- ups. Overall, these have become my go- to shoe for long trail runs. I ’ d definitely recommend them to anyone looking for a cushioned trail shoe that can go the distance.

I could n't be happier with my purchase of the Altra Experience Wild 3 trail running shoes. They were comfortable right out of the box with no break- in period, and they 've quickly become my go- to shoes for trail running. I 've used them on a variety of terrain, including rocky, uneven trails, dirt, gravel, and even wet bedrock. The traction has been outstanding, giving me confidence on slippery surfaces and technical sections where footing really matters. The shoes feel stable without sacrificing comfort, and they handled every type of trail I 've thrown at them with ease. If you 're looking for a trail running shoe that's incredibly comfortable, grips well in challenging conditions, and inspires confidence on rugged terrain, I highly recommend the Altra Experience Wild 3. I ’ ve been searching for a solid golfing shoe with a genuine wide toe box, and it turns out this trail hiking shoe absolutely nails it. The Fit: The signature wide toe box is a game- changer on the course, letting my toes splay naturally and engage fully during my swing. The Feel: The 4mm drop feels incredibly stable and provides a great, natural stance. Performance: Even though it ’s designed for the trails, the grip is fantastic on turf and provides excellent traction through every turn. I liked these so much that I immediately ordered a second pair in a different color. My only wish? I really hope they release a fully waterproof version of this model soon — it would make it the ultimate winter golf option. Highly recommended if you want trail- tested comfort and stability on the golf course.

I have purchased V6's all the way up to the V9's. Buy far, these have the best cushioning out of all the other models with a super grippy tread. You can wear these all day and not experience fatigue like other `` Runner '' shoes. Ca n't say enough good things about them.

I 'm on the hunt for a pair of shoes I can wear on a thru hike of the Appalachian Trail and I have tried many brands. I think these Hierro's might just be the ticket. Both of my feet feel good. I bought XX wide so there is plenty of toe room, even with 2 pairs of socks.

[ The Nike ACG Zegama were an exciting pair of sneakers to test. I am longtime fan of the ACG collection, mainly for it's forward and functional design. These trail sneakers embody both of those fully. I wore these on the trail routes near my home and they full adapted to the uneven and sometimes slippery terrain. I 've worn them on dry runs and just after rainfall, and the footprint/sole of this sneaker felt like it grasped the earth well in both circumstances. The elastic ankle detail hugged my foot just enough for added stabilization. I could really feel the vibram sole and full cushioning which I prefer when trail running. I appreciated the non slip grip the laces had on the upper, they felt secure the duration of each run. But my main takeaway was the width of the sole at the ball of the foot. It really felt different compared to other sneakers I run on trail with. This felt like when my foot stuck the ground, it was fully connecting, giving me more confidence and security with each step. The shoe was comfortable and responsive all around.

[ This shoe made it feel like I was walking on air. I recommend this shoe for anyone that spend a lot of time outside. I love the thickness of the sole on the shoe. I spend alot of time outside because plays sport and I find myself complaining about the lack of a good tennis shoe. I spent a couple of hours in this shoe and had no complaints. I love the simple black and white color tone of this shoe. I can wear this shoe with different colors.

[ The fit was true to size and surprisingly comfortable for my wide feet. I usually struggle finding trail shoes that feel supportive without being too tight, but these fit really well right out of the box. I also loved the overall design because it feels versatile enough for different outdoor activities. The bottom soles have a lot of grip, which made them great for trail hiking, uphill runs, and even climbing over rocky terrain. The cloth- like toe cover almost made it feel like I was running barefoot, but with enough protection and support. The fabric around the feet is soft, lightweight, and breathable. Compared to most hiking shoes, the traction on the bottom feels much lighter, which made it easier to pick up speed and do short runs comfortably. One of my favorite features was the ankle portion because it fits almost like a sock and feels secure without rubbing. What I liked most was how easy it felt to move in them. I was able to comfortably pick up my feet and transition into short uphill runs without feeling weighed down like traditional hiking shoes. Honestly, I wouldn ’ t change anything about the shoe. Even though it ’s not labeled as a wide shoe, it still worked well for my feet and provided solid arch support. My only recommendation would be to wear high socks and avoid wearing them barefoot. I made the mistake of doing a 2- mile uphill run without socks and ended up with blisters, so good socks definitely make a difference.

[ The ACG Zegama shoes do exactly what they say. Comfortable and stable for trail running. The wide toe box is excellent for maintaining stability on rough terrain. The mesh upper breathes really well. I haven ’ t tried it out in wet conditions/creeks but it feels like it would dry quickly. The ZoomX foam is my absolute favorite across Nike shoe lines. The ankle cuff prevents pebbles and dirt from causing irritation which is a great detail. The fit is true to size and their stylish/rugged appearance is a plus.

I 'm extremely happy with my purchase and would absolutely buy them again.

The shoe has much improved features. I ’ ve had each iteration and am glad they tossed vibram on it. Kudos to Altra for listening, these shoes are super durable. Only thing that could make this slightly better is a layer of vibram like the lone peak+ fully covering, and longer laces. All that said, they ’ re great, just got a second pair. I love these as a one quiver trail shoe.

So I started by ordering my normal Altra size: 11. This was perfect length wise until I did an abrupt stop in the store. My foot slid all the way forward and jammed my big toe. The width was too small. Then I tried the 11. 5 and neither issue existed. Now that I have the size dialed in, it is all good. I normally wear stability shoes in 11 wide( Paradigm 8 and Guide 19) for the road, and the Speedgoat 7 in 11. 5 wide in trail shoes. These just have a different kind of ride and fit to them compared to these other shoes, and it is very refreshing. In the 11. 5 size, it is the normal wide toe box Altra fit that feels closer to a zero drop with a softer landing. I live in Reno, NV, and for my typical weather, the grip has been excellent. No hot spots or blisters, and the heel locks down tight with runner loops. The laces are just long enough to relieve a little pressure on the top of the foot if I don ’ t heel locks, which is nice. The shoe breathes moderately. Some reviews I ’ ve read said the tongue was wonky. That hasn ’ t been my experience. It is definitely possible to get it to sit wrong, but you really need to work at it to do it. I will admit, however, it is a comfort focused tongue, so if that isn ’ t your thing, then……….. I have two complaints about the shoe so far, and both are fairly small. The laces could use another couple inches for a heel lock, and they need to change the profile of the laces. I can ’ t get these laces to stay tied if I really get after it. I replaced mine with slightly longer oval laces, and that fixed my complaint. My other complaint is about the lug depth and pattern. Getting to 5mil lugs and the pattern of the lone peak 9+ would make this shoe absolutely unstoppable. They are two very different grip experiences despite both being Vibram. Overall, these have been a great buy for me and my use case. I am not breaking land speed records, and I am not doing Ultras, but my 4- 6 mile adventures over plains, single track, rocks, light mud, steep climbs/descents, and minor pavement has been enjoyable. For context, I am 5 ’ 9 ”, 224 lbs, moderate fitness( Hyrox capable), and mid thirties with no major joint problems.

I 've been getting these for years( the speedcross series). It is a slightly narrow fit, so if you have wide feet, it might be uncomfortable. The size is spot on- I 'm an 8. 5 and get an 8. 5( when usually with sneakers I go up to a 9). I love the gore- tex as I do a lot of hiking, and I can just saunter right through puddles and it's no big deal. Will continue to buy these!

Slow and persistent
I just ordered my 4th pair of these. I love them and have completed several trail events ranging from 1/1 marathon distance to 50k wearing them. I even wore them when I ran the Chicago marathon last October, Honolulu Marathon in December and the Rock and Roll half marathon in Vegas in February- they were great on pavement too. I go through shoes pretty quickly, but these hold up well especially if you ’ re not a wrecking crew with your shoes, which I admit is a good description of me. I highly recommend them.

I am not a runner of any sort, but these have turned out to be my favorite pair of Merrells that i have ever owned, and i have lots of other styles. The fit is great, arch support is awesome even without my inserts, and it feels like it springs me forward with every step. Is this what happens with running shoes? I 've always steered away from these type of shoes since i do n't run, but i may rethink that. Just ordered a second pair, this time with the gore tex for wet winter walking!

I have found the perfect shoe for me. I need a fairly good amount of arch support, which these have. They are lightweight yet sturdy. I have worn Brooks for years, but lately find the footbed wears out really fast. The footbed in these feels more substantial, yet still has a good amount of cushion. I am also prone to toe pain and have no issues with these shoes. Wore them walking 11 miles in San Francisco and my feet and legs felt great at the end of the day.

I bought these for my 17 year old son when we ’ re hiking in Colorado. He said these were the best shoes he had ever wore. They had great support and cushion. He sized down 1/2 a size. This is the second pair I have bought for him because he loves them so much.

I bought this shoes January 2025. Immediately became my favorite pair over all other sneakers I own. Run every day with them and the quality of the shoe is truly remarkable. Thank you North Face.
When selecting trail running shoes for backpacking, consider features such as cushioning for comfort over long distances, a durable outsole for traction on varied terrain, and a lightweight design to reduce fatigue. Additionally, look for water-resistant materials to keep your feet dry and breathable fabrics to enhance ventilation during strenuous activities.
Trail running shoes are specifically designed for off-road conditions, offering enhanced grip and stability on uneven surfaces. They typically feature a more rugged outsole for better traction, reinforced toe caps for protection against rocks and roots, and a more secure fit to prevent slipping. In contrast, regular running shoes are optimized for pavement and may not provide the same level of support or durability needed for trail environments.
Trail running shoes can be suitable for many types of backpacking, especially for those who prioritize speed and agility on the trail. However, for heavier loads or more technical terrains, traditional hiking boots may offer better ankle support and protection. It's important to consider the specific conditions of your backpacking trip and your personal comfort preferences when choosing footwear.
Trail running shoes for backpacking are often made from lightweight synthetic materials that provide durability and breathability. Many feature mesh uppers for ventilation and quick-drying properties, while the outsoles are typically made from rubber compounds designed for traction and grip. Some models may also incorporate waterproof membranes to keep feet dry in wet conditions.
For optimal performance, trail running shoes should fit snugly but not too tight, allowing for some movement of the toes without excessive pressure. It's important to ensure there is enough room in the toe box to accommodate swelling during long hikes. Additionally, a secure heel fit is crucial to prevent blisters and ensure stability on uneven terrain.
Yes, trail running shoes can be versatile and used for various outdoor activities such as hiking, walking, and even light climbing. Their lightweight construction and grip make them suitable for fast-paced activities on trails. However, for more specialized activities, such as technical climbing or winter hiking, specific footwear designed for those conditions may be more appropriate.
