I 'm a long- time avid runner, and for years, I avoided Nikes since they typically have a higher heel- to- toe drop. However, I took a shot on these because I love the look and the price on sale, and I am please to find that I love everything about them. They do fit small like Nikes tend to do, but once you find the right size, they are extremely comfortable and a pleasure to run in. I plan to buy at least one more pair in another color combo.

There's a little more of a heel lift to these vs. the Altra Olympus, but not much. They run pretty wide. I was on the fence of buying trail shoes or hiking boots for my Yellowstone and Grand Tetons trip. I am so glad I chose the Cascadia. We hiked 50 miles of trails. Bunsen peak, Mt Washburn( 95% snow on trail), Signal Mtn, Cascade Canyon, and a few others. The lugs on the shoes had terrific grip, the stiffness/responsiveness of the shoe helped pushing off when going uphill. Even in the snow they stayed dry! No gaiters or anything. These shoes fit true to size and are amazingly comfortable. They are soft and squishy enough to survive 10- hour days working on concrete but also rock solid on runs and in the gym. I have the altra gators and( not just this shoe but others) the laces do n't go far enough towards to toes so you ca n't use the lace hook on the gator. After many unsatisfying purchases and many returns, I have found the exact shoe I have been looking for, for use in long distance walking. It is very difficult to find a shoe that has lots of cushion* and* a more minimalist arch support( I have found that Hoka and even Altra just have too much arch support, which is uncomfortable if you have a flatter foot and/or do n't want or need arch support). The only thing I did n't like was the un- cushioned tongue, which was pressing a bit too much into my front ankle tendons. I solved this problem by using scissors to cut a small slit in each tongue to relieve that pressure( see photo). Now they are perfect! I will be buying these again.

Traction is great and I would recommend this shoe if your runs are frequently in a wet environment or snow. They are very comfortable with plenty of room in the toe box which is often an issue for me. I sized up 1 size from dress shoes worn with no socks to accommodate cushioned hiking socks. Excellent light hiker as I hike about 5 miles or less per day. Shoelaces tend to slip and untie so I double knot them.

I just ordered my second pair of the Rubatos to replace the ones I ordered a year ago. I walk about 1- 4 miles a day and have worn these on about 66% of those walks. They provide plenty of cushioning and support. I can wear these for long periods of time without my lower back and feet hurting. Suggestions to make this the perfect shoe: a little bit better ventilation, a little more width in the toe box and maybe add 1mm to the lugs. The lack of availability in colors and sizes makes me think these are or will be discontinued:>{ I wish Merrell would make more zero drop shoes and sandals.
